A Rare Temple Depicting the Combined Form of Shiva and Parvati at Guptakashi
Ardhnareshwar Temple in Guptakashi is dedicated to Ardhnareshwar — the composite androgynous form of Lord Shiva (right half) and Goddess Parvati (left half). This iconographic form symbolises the inseparable nature of the masculine and feminine cosmic energies. Temples dedicated exclusively to Ardhnareshwar are extremely rare in India, making this one particularly significant.
The temple is located within the Guptakashi temple complex, near the Vishwanath Temple and Manikarnika Kund. The deity is depicted with the right half showing Shiva's characteristics (tiger skin, trident, crescent moon, matted hair) and the left half showing Parvati's (silk garment, jewellery, flower). It is a deeply revered shrine that draws both pilgrims and scholars of Hindu iconography.
Year-round. Best during pilgrimage season May–June and September–November when the whole Guptakashi area is active.
