A Remote Alpine Lake Surrounded by Dense Himalayan Forest, Birthplace of Lord Ganesha
Dodital Lake is a pristine high-altitude freshwater lake at 3307 metres, considered sacred as the believed birthplace of Lord Ganesha. "Dodi" in local Garhwali dialect means trout, and the lake is famous for its population of the rare Himalayan Golden Trout (Schizothorax richardsonii). It is situated about 24 km from Sangamchatti village, which is the nearest roadhead.
The trek to Dodital is one of the most rewarding in the Uttarkashi region, passing through dense forests of oak, rhododendron and conifer, with views of the Gangotri ranges. The Dodital lake itself sits in a beautiful bowl surrounded by thick forest. Further trek (2 km) leads to Darwa Top (4110m) which offers a panoramic view of the Himalayas. The area is also a great destination for bird watching.
May to June and September to November are ideal. The lake freezes in winter (Dec–March). Monsoon is lush but trails can be muddy.
Nearest railway: Rishikesh (155 km + 19 km). Taxi to Uttarkashi, then to Sangamchatti.
Bus to Uttarkashi, local jeep to Sangamchatti, then trek.
Sangamchatti is 19 km from Uttarkashi (1 hr by taxi). Then 24 km trek to lake.
