Best Time to Visit Jammu & Kashmir
Apr – Jun (Spring & Summer)
The best time for Kashmir Valley tourism. The Tulip Garden blooms in April (Asia largest with 1.5 million tulips). Temperatures are 10-25°C, perfect for Dal Lake houseboat stays, Pahalgam meadows and Gulmarg green slopes. The Amarnath Yatra typically begins in June. Mughal Gardens and Betaab Valley are at their most beautiful.
Jul – Oct (Monsoon & Autumn)
The Amarnath Yatra concludes in August. July-August sees light rain in the valley making it lush and green. September-October is the golden autumn season when chinar trees turn fiery red and orange — one of the most photogenic times to visit Kashmir. Temperatures are cool and comfortable, ideal for sightseeing across Srinagar, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
Dec – Mar (Winter & Skiing)
Gulmarg is India best ski resort in winter — deep powder snow from December to March, professional ski runs from Gondola Phase 2 at 4,390 m and a vibrant ski resort atmosphere. Srinagar experiences light snowfall — a magical experience for honeymoon couples. Vaishno Devi can be visited year-round and is especially popular in winter. Dal Lake occasionally freezes in January.
How to Reach Jammu & Kashmir
By Air — Srinagar
Sheikh ul Alam Airport, Srinagar (SXR) has direct flights from Delhi (1.5 hrs), Mumbai (2.5 hrs), Chandigarh, Jammu and Leh. It is the main gateway to the Kashmir Valley for most tourists.
By Air — Jammu
Jammu Airport (IXJ) is the gateway for Vaishno Devi pilgrims and south Kashmir visitors. Direct flights from Delhi (1 hr), Mumbai and Chandigarh. Vaishno Devi base camp (Katra) is 50 km from Jammu Airport.
By Train
Jammu Tawi Railway Station is the main railhead — connected to Delhi (10 hrs), Mumbai (28 hrs) and all major Indian cities. From Jammu, take a taxi or bus to Srinagar (280 km, 8-9 hrs via Jawahar Tunnel) or Katra for Vaishno Devi.
By Road
National Highway 44 connects Jammu to Delhi (585 km, 12 hrs) and is the main road artery. The Jammu-Srinagar Highway (NH-44) through the Jawahar Tunnel connects the two cities in 8-9 hours. TVI arranges road transfers from Delhi, Chandigarh or Amritsar.

Must-Try Kashmiri Food
