Odisha — formerly Orissa — is one of India's most ancient and culturally rich states, stretching along the Bay of Bengal on the eastern coast. Known as the Land of Temples, it houses more than 100 ancient temples from the Kalinga architectural tradition — a style unique to this region, characterised by curvilinear shikhara towers, intricately carved walls and a spiritual atmosphere that permeates every stone. Odisha is also the land of great rivers (Mahanadi, Brahmani, Baitarani), Asia's largest coastal lagoon (Chilika Lake), dense tiger forests (Simlipal) and some of India's most vibrant tribal cultures in the Koraput highlands.
The Golden Triangle of Odisha — Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark — is the heart of any Odisha tour package. Bhubaneswar, the Temple City of India, was once home to 7,000 temples (700+ survive today), of which the 11th-century Lingaraj Temple is the grandest — a soaring 55 m tower of sandstone dedicated to Lord Shiva, surrounded by 50 subsidiary shrines. Puri — one of the four sacred dhams of Hinduism — is home to the Jagannath Temple, where Lord Jagannath (a form of Vishnu) resides with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra. The annual Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival) in June-July draws over 10 lakh devotees and is listed in the Guinness World Records as the world's largest chariot procession.
Konark — 35 km from Puri — is home to the magnificent Sun Temple, built in 1250 CE by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. Conceived as a colossal chariot of the Sun God with 24 intricately carved wheels and 7 stone horses, the Konark Sun Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the greatest architectural achievements in Indian history. The erotic carvings on its walls rival those of Khajuraho and represent the full spectrum of human experience in Tantric philosophy. The annual Konark Dance Festival (December) showcases classical Indian dance forms against the backdrop of the illuminated temple.
Chilika Lake — spread over 1,100 sq km across the Khurda, Puri and Ganjam districts — is Asia's largest coastal lagoon and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. In winter (November-February), over 1.6 lakh migratory birds arrive from Central Asia, Iran and Siberia. The lake is also home to a resident population of Irrawaddy dolphins — one of only a few locations in the world where these rare dolphins can be seen. Simlipal National Park in Mayurbhanj district is one of India's oldest tiger reserves, sheltering 50+ tigers, 400+ elephants, rare melanistic tigers, gaur, wild dogs and the stunning Joranda (150 m) and Barehipani (399 m — Odisha's highest waterfall) falls within its 2,750 sq km of sal forest.
The Konark Sun Temple — built in 1250 CE as a colossal stone chariot of the Sun God with 24 carved wheels and 7 horses — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the greatest architectural achievements in Indian history. The Konark Dance Festival in December is a magical cultural event.
Puri is one of the four sacred dhams of Hinduism. The Jagannath Temple — with its 65 m tall tower — is one of the holiest shrines in India. The Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival) in June-July draws 10+ lakh pilgrims and is the world's largest chariot procession, listed in Guinness World Records.
Asia's largest coastal lagoon is home to rare Irrawaddy dolphins and hosts 1.6 lakh migratory birds in winter. A sunrise boat safari to Nalabana Island (Ramsar site) or Satapada for dolphin watching is one of Odisha's most memorable wildlife experiences.
Simlipal National Park shelters 50+ tigers (including rare melanistic/black tigers), 400+ elephants, gaur, wild dogs and the stunning 399 m Barehipani Waterfall — Odisha's highest. One of India's least-crowded and most pristine tiger reserves, perfect for serious wildlife lovers.
Bhubaneswar was once home to 7,000 temples. The 11th-century Lingaraj Temple (55 m, stunning Kalinga architecture), Rajarani Temple (famous for its nayika sculptures), Mukteshwar Temple (10th century, finest small temple in Odisha) and Udayagiri-Khandagiri caves make it a living temple museum.
Bhitarkanika National Park — Odisha's second national park — has the world's largest concentration of saltwater crocodiles (1,700+), nesting Olive Ridley sea turtles at Gahirmatha Beach (world's largest sea turtle rookery) and rich mangrove forests teeming with water monitors and kingfishers.
Daringbadi — the Kashmir of Odisha — is a cool hill station at 915 m in the Eastern Ghats with pine forests, coffee and pepper plantations, waterfalls and a pleasant climate year-round. A perfect add-on to any Odisha honeymoon or family tour, especially during summer when the coast is hot.
The Koraput and Rayagada tribal belt is home to 62 Scheduled Tribes — Kondh, Dongria Kondh, Bonda, Gadaba, Saura and Koya — who maintain ancient traditions, distinctive body art, handicrafts and weekly tribal haats (markets). TVI organises responsible tribal village tours with local community guides.
The best time for Odisha tourism — pleasant temperatures (15-28°C) across the coast and interior. November-February is peak season for Chilika Lake bird watching (1.6 lakh migratory birds from Siberia and Central Asia). Simlipal NP is open and comfortable. Puri beach mornings are perfect. The Konark Dance Festival in December is a world-class cultural event held against the illuminated backdrop of the Sun Temple.
March is still pleasant — ideal for temple visits before the heat builds. April-June is hot (35-42°C) on the coast — Daringbadi hill station is the best escape during this time. June-July brings the spectacular Rath Yatra at Puri — the world's largest chariot festival drawing 10+ lakh pilgrims. Simlipal NP closes in July for monsoon. The Dola Yatra (Holi festival) at Puri in March is a vibrant and colourful celebration.
Odisha's monsoon (July-October) brings heavy rainfall — Simlipal closes, coastal areas can flood and travel is difficult in the interior. However, the Eastern Ghats and Daringbadi become lush and beautiful. Waterfalls in Simlipal (Joranda and Barehipani) are at their most spectacular in late monsoon. October is the best month within this period — rains recede, greenery remains and temperatures cool to 25-30°C before peak season begins.

Bhubaneswar is on the main Howrah-Chennai railway line — connected to Delhi (Rajdhani, 20 hrs), Kolkata (5 hrs), Mumbai (30 hrs) and Chennai (11 hrs). Puri Junction is the railhead for pilgrims, with direct trains from Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. TVI arranges rail transfers from Bhubaneswar and Puri.

Boat safaris are the primary mode of exploration at Chilika Lake and Bhitarkanika mangroves. TVI arranges motorboat and country boat safaris from Satapada (Chilika dolphins), Nalabana (bird sanctuary) and Dangmala (Bhitarkanika crocodiles). All boat permits and forest entry are included in TVI packages.
