Sikkim, nestled in the eastern Himalayas between Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan, is one of India's smallest yet most extraordinary states. Often known as the Land of Monasteries, this Himalayan gem packs extraordinary diversity into just 7,096 sq km — glaciated peaks above 8,000 metres, subtropical forests in river valleys, ancient Buddhist gompas draped in prayer flags, cardamom and tea gardens, and an indigenous population representing Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepali communities with their rich cultural traditions. These tour packages draw travellers seeking pristine natural beauty, Buddhist spiritual heritage and high-altitude adventure in equal measure.
Gangtok, the state capital, sits at 1,650 metres on a ridge of the Shivalik Hills and is the gateway for all tours here. MG Marg — the pedestrian promenade — is the social heart of the city, lined with Tibetan bakeries, handicraft shops and cafes overlooking the Himalayan ranges. The Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, Do-drul Chorten stupa with 108 prayer wheels, Enchey Monastery and the Flower Exhibition Centre are essential stops for any Gangtok tour. A ropeway links Gangtok to Deorali and Nam Nang, offering bird's-eye views over the forested hillsides and the distant Khangchendzonga range.
The most iconic monastery here is Rumtek — located 24 km from Gangtok on a forested hilltop, it is the largest monastery in the state and the seat of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Built in 1966 by the 16th Karmapa as an exact replica of Tsurphu Monastery in Tibet, Rumtek houses a golden stupa, elaborate thangka paintings, a library of Buddhist texts and the Nalanda Institute for Higher Buddhist Studies. In the western region, Pemayangtse Monastery (1705 CE) is one of the oldest and most revered monasteries in the state, overlooking the Kanchenjunga massif from its perch above Pelling. Nearby lie the ruins of Rabdentse — the former capital of the Chogyal kings — offering panoramic Himalayan views from a forested archeological site.
Khangchendzonga National Park — India's first UNESCO mixed (natural and cultural) World Heritage Site — covers the western half of the state and protects some of the world's most endangered wildlife including the red panda, snow leopard, Himalayan blue sheep and musk deer. The park forms the base for the legendary Goecha La Trek, which winds through rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, glacial moraines and moraine lakes before reaching Goecha La pass at 4,940 metres — the closest any trekker can get to the third highest mountain on earth. Tour Venture India offers expertly guided tour packages covering the full spectrum of this extraordinary Himalayan destination — from monastery pilgrimages and Nathu La border passes to Teesta river rafting and Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary walks.
Khangchendzonga National Park — India's only UNESCO mixed heritage site combining natural and cultural values around the world's 3rd highest peak.
Rumtek, Pemayangtse, Enchey, Tashiding, Ralang — the state has over 200 gompas making it India's most monastery-dense destination.
The national parks and sanctuaries here protect rare Himalayan wildlife including red panda, snow leopard and 550+ bird species.
One of India's finest high-altitude treks reaching 4,940 m — the closest viewpoint to Khangchendzonga (8,586 m) for trekkers.
The Teesta River offers Grade III–IV white-water rafting through deep gorges and forested banks — North-East India's premier rafting experience.
Sikkim is India's orchid capital with 600+ orchid species and the famous Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary ablaze with 24 species every spring.
Nathu La (4,310 m) on the Indo-Chinese border and the sacred Tsomgo (Changu) Lake (3,753 m) are iconic high-altitude experiences from Gangtok.
Thukpa, momos, Gundruk soup, Phagshapa, Sel Roti and Chhaang millet beer — Sikkim's Tibetan-Nepali fusion cuisine is unique anywhere in India.
The most popular time for tours in this Himalayan state. March–May brings spectacular rhododendron blooms across Barsey Sanctuary and Yumthang Valley, with pleasant temperatures (10–22°C). April is ideal for Goecha La Trek. June sees the onset of summer but remains pleasant at altitude. Gangtok Flower Show (May) and Saga Dawa (Buddha Jayanti) attract visitors across the state.
This is the second-best time for travel to this region. Post-monsoon skies are crystal clear, offering the best Khangchendzonga mountain views from Gangtok and Pelling. October–November is perfect for Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La Pass, Pemayangtse sunrise and Goecha La Trek. Temperatures drop from 5–18°C. The Tihar and Chhath festivals add cultural vibrancy.
The monsoon brings heavy rainfall, frequent landslides and road closures on NH-10 between Siliguri and Gangtok. Nathu La Pass closes for tourists. North Sikkim (Lachung, Lachen) may be inaccessible. However, Gangtok itself remains accessible and hotel rates drop significantly. Waterfalls are at their dramatic best — Banjhakri Falls and Seven Sisters Waterfall are spectacular in monsoon.
Bagdogra Airport (IXB), West Bengal is the nearest airport, 124 km from Gangtok. Flights from Delhi (2.5 hrs), Kolkata (1 hr) and Mumbai (3 hrs). Transfer by shared or private taxi via NH-10 (3–4 hrs).
New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station, 114 km from Gangtok, is the railhead. Delhi to NJP: Darjeeling Mail (18 hrs), Kolkata to NJP: 8 hrs. Tour Venture India arranges NJP pickup for all packages.
NH-10 connects Siliguri (West Bengal) to Gangtok via Rangpo (115 km, 3–4 hrs). Shared jeeps operate from Siliguri New Bus Stand. Private taxis from NJP or Bagdogra are most convenient.
Pawan Hans operates helicopter services from Bagdogra to Gangtok (30 min). Weather-dependent, scenic flights over Himalayan foothills. Advance booking essential during peak season (Oct–May).
Arrive at Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri station. Meet your Tour Venture India driver and transfer to Gangtok (3–4 hrs via NH-10). En route, cross the Teesta River at Rangpo — the official entry point into the state. Check in at your hotel. Evening at leisure on MG Marg pedestrian street — explore Tibetan handicraft shops, try momos at a local café and enjoy the mountain air. Overnight in Gangtok.
Morning visit to Rumtek Monastery (24 km from Gangtok) — the largest monastery in Sikkim, seat of the Karma Kagyu lineage. Explore the Dharma Chakra Centre, golden stupa and Nalanda Institute. Afternoon Gangtok city tour: Namgyal Institute of Tibetology (rare Buddhist manuscript collection), Do-drul Chorten with 108 prayer wheels and Enchey Monastery (200-year-old Nyingma gompa). Evening ropeway ride over Gangtok's forested hillsides. Overnight in Gangtok.
Early morning drive to Nathu La Pass (4,310 m) on the Indo-Chinese border — one of the few open land border crossings between India and China. The drive through Baba Mandir and the ancient Silk Route is spectacular. Visit the sacred Tsomgo (Changu) Lake (3,753 m), a glacial lake revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. Return to Gangtok for overnight. Note: Nathu La requires additional Protected Area Permit, arranged by Tour Venture India.
Drive from Gangtok to Pelling (130 km, ~4 hrs) via Ravangla. Stop at Buddha Park Ravangla — the striking 130-ft seated Sakyamuni Buddha statue overlooking the valley. Continue to Namchi with views of Char Dham Replica and South Sikkim tea gardens. Arrive Pelling in the evening. Check in to your hotel — rooms facing west offer the famous Kanchenjunga sunset view. Overnight in Pelling.
Early morning Kanchenjunga sunrise from your hotel window — watching the golden light illuminate the world's third highest mountain is among Sikkim's most memorable experiences. Visit Pemayangtse Monastery (1705 CE), one of the oldest and highest-ranking gompas in Sikkim, renowned for its seven-storey miniature model of Zangdog Palri (heaven). Walk to Rabdentse Ruins — the 17th-century second capital of Sikkim, now a peaceful hilltop site with dramatic valley views. Afternoon visit to Khecheopalri Lake, the sacred "wishing lake" revered by both Buddhists and Hindus. Overnight in Pelling.
Morning at leisure with final Kanchenjunga views. Optional visit to Singshore Bridge — Asia's second highest suspension bridge (198 m above the gorge). Transfer to Bagdogra Airport or NJP station (5–6 hrs via Jorethang). Tour Venture India's driver ensures timely drop for your onward journey. If time permits, stop at a cardamom and organic spice farm in South Sikkim — a fragrant final Himalayan memory.
