Tripura is one of India's smallest and most fascinating states — a hidden gem tucked in the northeastern corner of the country, almost entirely surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides, with only a narrow corridor connecting it to the rest of India through Assam and Mizoram. Yet despite its compact geography, the state packs an extraordinary density of culture, history, natural beauty and spiritual significance that puts many larger states to shame. Known as the "Land of Fourteen Gods" — a reference to the Chaturdasha Devata, the fourteen deities worshipped by the royal Tripuri tribe — this state offers travellers a rare, authentic window into a world that most of India has never seen. tour packages to this state are rapidly gaining popularity as more travellers discover this offbeat Northeast India destination.
The state capital Agartala is one of the most rapidly developing cities in Northeast India. At its heart stands the magnificent Ujjayanta Palace — the former royal palace of the Manikya dynasty, built in 1901 by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya in a stunning blend of Mughal and European architecture. Set amid 28 acres of Mughal-style gardens with ornamental pools, the palace is now a state museum housing an extraordinary collection of tribal artefacts, royal memorabilia and religious icons. Just a short distance away, the Jagannath Temple is a major pilgrimage centre that draws devotees from across the state and Bangladesh. The Gedu Mian Mosque, Umamaheswar Temple and the lively Battala Market complete Agartala's rich cultural tapestry.
No visit to the state is complete without visiting Neermahal — the breathtaking water palace rising dramatically from the middle of Lake Rudrasagar in Melaghar, about 53 km from Agartala. Built in 1938 by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, Neermahal is the largest water palace in East India and a unique architectural marvel that combines Mughal and Hindu design elements. Visitors reach the palace by boat, gliding across the serene lake waters surrounded by lotus flowers and migratory birds. At sunset, the palace glows golden against the still water — a scene of breathtaking beauty that makes Neermahal one of the most photogenic destinations in all of Northeast India. The annual Neermahal Jalaustav (water festival) held in August is a spectacular celebration of the state's royal heritage.
The spiritual geography here is equally impressive. The Tripura Sundari Temple in Udaipur — also known as the Matabari — is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Hinduism and one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in Northeast India. The temple goddess Tripura Sundari (Soroshi) is considered the presiding deity of all of the state and draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually. Unakoti, located 178 km from Agartala near Kailasahar, is the state's most mysterious and awe-inspiring archaeological site — a vast hillside forest filled with thousands of rock-cut images of Shiva, Ganesha, Nandi and other deities, some dating back to the 7th–9th centuries CE. The name Unakoti means "one less than a crore" (ten million), referring to the local legend about the number of deities carved here. Unakoti is being developed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site nomination candidate and represents tourism here at its most extraordinary.
The best time to visit Tripura. Pleasant temperatures of 12–25°C, clear skies and dry roads. Ideal for Neermahal boat rides, Ujjayanta Palace, Unakoti carvings and Jampui Hills trekking. The Hojagiri tribal dance festival (Laxmi Puja, October) and Christmas celebrations in Agartala are major highlights. Book packages 6–8 weeks in advance for this season.
Temperatures climb to 30–35°C. The Neermahal Jalaustav (water festival) in August is worth planning ahead. Orange season in Jampui Hills peaks in November–December. The Tripura Sundari Temple in Udaipur sees large pilgrimage crowds during Diwali and Navaratri. Wildlife sanctuaries remain open but early morning safaris are recommended.
The state receives heavy Northeast monsoon rainfall — roads can become difficult, especially in hilly areas like Jampui Hills and Unakoti. Neermahal lake levels rise and the water palace looks lush and atmospheric. Budget travellers find excellent package discounts during monsoon. The Neermahal Jalaustav water festival (August) is spectacular despite the rain.
Pro Tip: Visit Neermahal on a weekday morning to avoid weekend crowds — the boat ride at 7 AM when mist still hangs over the lake is magical. For Unakoti, hire a local guide from Kailasahar who knows the forest trails — many rock carvings are hidden off the main path. Book tour packages at least 6 weeks in advance for the October–February peak season.
Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala (IXA) is the state's main airport with direct flights from Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Guwahati and Imphal. IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet operate regular flights here. The airport is just 12 km from the city centre. A second airport at Kailasahar (IXH) connects North Tripura to Kolkata.
Agartala Railway Station connects the state to Kolkata (Howrah) and Guwahati via Lumding Junction. The Agartala–Kolkata Express takes approximately 36 hours. The recently inaugurated Agartala–Akhaura (Bangladesh) rail link has opened new connectivity options. Dharmanagar and Kailasahar also have railway stations serving North Tripura.
Arrive at Agartala airport and check into your hotel. Begin your tour with a visit to the magnificent Ujjayanta Palace — the former royal residence now serving as the Tripura State Museum. Explore the palace's beautifully landscaped Mughal gardens, the ornamental pools and the three imposing domes. The museum's collection of tribal costumes, musical instruments, bamboo crafts and royal artefacts provides an extraordinary introduction to the state's diverse heritage. In the afternoon, visit the Jagannath Temple and the Gedu Mian Mosque — both reflecting the state's remarkable religious harmony. Explore the Battala Market for Tripuri handicrafts and bamboo products. Enjoy an evening of local local cuisine at a restaurant in Agartala.
Drive from Agartala to Neermahal (53 km). Take the iconic boat ride across Lake Rudrasagar to reach the stunning Neermahal Water Palace — the crown jewel of tourism in Northeast India. Spend the morning exploring the palace's arched corridors, decorated chambers, and lotus-filled courtyards rising dramatically from the water. The boat ride back at midday offers spectacular views of the palace reflected in the still lake. Continue to Udaipur — the second-largest city in the state and an important pilgrimage centre. Visit the Tripura Sundari Temple (Matabari) — one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. The temple complex on the banks of the Kalyani and Mahamuni rivers is deeply atmospheric. Also visit the Bhubaneswari Temple and Mahamuni Buddhist Temple in Udaipur before returning to Agartala.
Morning visit to Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary — just 25 km from Agartala and one of the most accessible wildlife experiences. Sepahijala is one of only a few places in India where you can see the rare clouded leopard and the unique spectacled monkey (a subspecies found only in Northeast India). The sanctuary also has a zoo, a botanical garden with over 150 orchid species, and a natural lake where migratory birds congregate in winter. The birdwatching here is exceptional — hornbills, kingfishers, storks and hundreds of migratory waterfowl can be seen from November to February. Afternoon, visit Pilak — an important archaeological site with Buddhist and Hindu sculptures dating from the 8th–12th centuries, showing the unique cultural synthesis of ancient times.
Drive 178 km north to Unakoti — the most extraordinary archaeological site in Tripura. Unakoti means "one less than a crore" and refers to the vast collection of rock-cut bas-relief images of Shiva, Ganesha, Vishnu, Nandi and other deities carved into a forested hillside near Kailasahar. The main Shiva head (Unakotiswara Kal Bhairava) stands 30 feet tall — one of the largest rock-cut images in India. Walking through the forest past thousands of ancient sculptures is a profoundly moving experience unlike anything else in Northeast India. The waterfall cascading beside the main Shiva image is particularly spectacular during and after the monsoon. Overnight in Kailasahar or continue to Dharmanagar.
Drive to Jampui Hills — the highest mountain range in the state at 930 metres above sea level, running along the Mizoram border. Jampui is famous across the region for its sweeping panoramic views, vast orange orchards that blaze orange from November to January, and the vibrant Mizo-Tripuri tribal culture of the Lushai community. Trek to the sunrise viewpoint for a spectacular dawn view across the valley. Visit a tribal village to learn about traditional bamboo weaving, rice beer brewing and the famous Hojagiri dance tradition. Return to Agartala for your departure flight, carrying with you the vivid memories of a tour like no other.
