Over 580 Bird Species Including Rare Migratory Birds at Sattal Lake
Sattal Bird Watching is one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences in Uttarakhand. The Sattal lake cluster and surrounding oak forests host over 580 species of resident and migratory birds, making it one of the top birding destinations in North India.
Notable species include the Brown Wood Owl, Rufous-bellied Woodpecker, Himalayan Griffon Vulture, Slaty-backed Forktail, Blue Whistling Thrush, Oriental Turtle Dove and various species of sunbirds, warblers and flycatchers. Winter months (November–February) see large numbers of migratory waterfowl on the lakes. The Sattal Christian Ashram also maintains a bird feeding programme.
The absolute best time for birding is November to February when migratory species arrive. Early mornings (5–8 AM) are most productive. Carry binoculars and wear muted colours.
