A Hidden Gem of Seven Natural Freshwater Lakes in Kumaon Uttarakhand
Sattal (meaning "Seven Lakes") is a cluster of seven natural, fresh and undisturbed freshwater lakes located in the lower Himalayan range of Nainital district. The seven lakes are Ram Tal, Sita Tal, Laxman Tal, Purna Tal, Sukha Tal, Garud Tal and Nala Tal — named after characters from the Ramayana.
Sattal is one of the few remaining lakes in the Himalayan foothills that has not been urbanised. It is surrounded by dense oak forests and is a designated bird sanctuary, hosting over 580 species of resident and migratory birds. The serene atmosphere makes it perfect for fishing, boating, kayaking, yoga and meditation retreats.
October to June is ideal. November to February for migratory birds. March to May for pleasant weather and boat rides. Monsoon (July–September) makes the forests lush but boating may be restricted.
