Also Known as China Peak – a Rewarding Trek to the Highest Summit Above Nainital with 360° Himalayan Views
Cheena Peak (also called China Peak) is the highest summit near Nainital, standing at 2611 metres above sea level. It is situated about 6 km from Nainital town and is accessible by a pleasant trek through dense oak, rhododendron and deodar forests. From the summit, on a clear day, one can see a spectacular 360-degree panorama of the Himalayan range including Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath and Chaukhamba peaks, as well as a bird's-eye view of the Nainital lake far below.
The trek to Cheena Peak starts from Mallital (the northern end of Nainital lake) and takes about 3–4 hours to reach the summit. The trail passes through the Kilbury Bird Sanctuary area, making it an excellent route for bird watching along the way. Cheena Peak is also accessible by horse riding, which is a popular option for those who prefer not to trek. There is a small tea stall near the top and the views justify every step of the climb.
October to March for the clearest Himalayan views from the summit. March to May for rhododendron blooms on the trail. Avoid July–August (monsoon — slippery trails, poor visibility).
