What is Naini Lake Nainital?

Quick Answer

Naini Lake Nainital is a pear-shaped natural freshwater lake at 2,084m altitude surrounded by seven hills (Sapt-Shring) in Kumaon Himalayas. Famous for sunset boating, Naina Devi Temple (Shakti Peeth) on its north shore, and Mall Road along its east bank. Boating: 6 AM–6 PM daily. No entry fee. Nearest railway station: Kathgodam (23 km).

Naini Lake, locally called Naini Jheel, is the centrepiece of Nainital — a hill station that grew around this very lake in the 1840s when the British first settled here. The lake sits in a natural bowl formed by seven surrounding peaks: Naina (2,615m), Deopatha (2,438m), Handi-Bandi (2,143m), Cheena/China (2,611m), Alma (2,278m), Larya-Kanta (2,481m), and Sher-Ka-Danda (2,647m). Together, these seven hills give Naini Lake Nainital its dramatic natural amphitheatre that no other Indian hill-station lake can match.

The lake is divided into two ends — Mallital (upper end, where the main Naina Devi Temple and boat jetty are) and Tallital (lower end, where the bus stand and flats market are). Mall Road runs along the eastern shore connecting the two. The Naini View Nainital — the view of the lake from Snow View Point (2,270m) or from Cheena Peak via ropeway — is considered one of the most photographed vistas in the Himalayas.

The lake is fed entirely by natural springs and rainwater. It has no inflow river. Average depth is about 27 metres at the deepest point near Mallital. In the great landslide of 1880, part of the northern shore collapsed, destroying around 150 structures — which is why the northern flank remains less developed even today. The lake water is clear enough that you can see 2–3 metres below the surface during October–November, when the Naini Lake views are at their finest.

Where is the Best Naini View in Nainital?

The Naini View Nainital from the surrounding hills is as iconic as being on the lake itself. Here are the top viewpoints where you see the full pear-shape of Naini Lake from above:

1. Snow View Point (2,270m) — Best Naini Lake View

Reached by ropeway (cable car) from Mallital in 5 minutes. On a clear day — especially October to February — you see Naini Lake Nainital spread below like a jewel, with Nanda Devi (7,816m) and Trishul (7,120m) rising behind the hills. Best time: early morning 7–9 AM before haze builds.

2. Tiffin Top / Dorothy's Seat (2,292m) — 360° Naini View

A 2 km horse ride or trek from Ayarpatta. Named after Dorothy Kellett who painted this view extensively. The Naini view from Tiffin Top includes the full lake + all seven surrounding hills in one frame — the most complete panorama in Nainital.

3. Cheena / China Peak (2,611m) — Highest Naini Lake View

The highest peak in Nainital. 5 km trek or horse ride from town. From here you see not just Naini Lake but also Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal all at once — plus the highest Himalayan peaks on clear winter mornings.

4. Mall Road Sunset Point — Naini Lake View at Eye Level

Walking along Mall Road at sunset gives you the Naini Lake Nainital view at water level — the lake turns golden, the surrounding hills go dark purple, and the temple reflection shimmers. No trek needed — completely flat walk from Mallital to Tallital (1.5 km).

Naini Lake Boating — Timings, Boat Types & Charges

Boating on Naini Lake Nainital is the single most popular activity here. The Nainital Boat Club (established 1897) operates the official boating jetty at Mallital. Sunset boating (5–6 PM) when the hills glow amber is the most sought-after experience.

🚣 Rowing Boat

Manual 2–4 person boat. Most popular for couples. Peaceful glide — you control the pace. Available all day from Mallital jetty.

🚤 Paddle Boat

Pedal-powered 2-person boat. Great for families with kids. Easier to control than rowing. Available at both Mallital and Tallital ends.

⛵ Sail Boat

Wind-powered — the most scenic experience on Naini Lake. Subject to wind and seasonal availability. Best in monsoon and post-monsoon when winds are stronger.

What is the Best Time to Visit Naini Lake Nainital?

Based on our experience taking thousands of guests to Naini Lake Nainital, here is an honest season-by-season breakdown:

🌸 March – June (Peak)

Temperature: 10–27°C. Lake is full, boating conditions are perfect. Rhododendrons bloom on surrounding hills. School holidays (May–June) mean heavy crowds — book hotels 30–45 days in advance. Best Naini Lake views in morning light.

🌿 July – August (Monsoon)

Heavy rain — lake becomes choppy, mist covers the hills. The famous Naini view Nainital from Snow View Point is often hidden in clouds. Avoid if you want boating or viewpoint views. But room rates are 40–50% cheaper and the hills are lush green.

🍂 September – November ⭐ Best

Our top recommendation. Crystal-clear Naini Lake reflects the surrounding hills perfectly. Himalayan snow peaks are visible from Snow View. Fewer crowds than May–June. Temperature 8–22°C. Ideal for photography, boating and trekking.

❄️ December – February (Winter)

Temperature: 0–12°C. Snow on surrounding hills makes Naini Lake Nainital look magical. Boating continues unless the jetty is icy. Carry heavy woolens — nights drop to 0–3°C. Very few crowds. Perfect for couples who want a quiet, cosy winter getaway.
