Sacred Goddess Durga Shrine Above Pauri with Sweeping Views of the Garhwal Himalayan Range
Durga Devi Temple is an ancient and revered hilltop shrine dedicated to Goddess Durga located above Pauri town in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. Perched on a commanding ridge, the temple offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Garhwal Himalayan range visible from Pauri, with snow-capped peaks including Kedarnath, Trishul, Nanda Devi, and Chaukhamba stretching across the northern horizon. The setting of the temple — on a forested hilltop with the vast mountain panorama behind it — creates a spiritually uplifting atmosphere that draws both pilgrims and nature seekers.
The Durga Devi Temple is one of the most important goddess shrines in Pauri Garhwal and attracts large numbers of devotees during the auspicious periods of Navratri (twice a year — Chaitra and Sharadiya), when the temple comes alive with rituals, music, and thousands of worshippers. The temple complex includes a main shrine, sacred kund (pond), and a small dharamshala for pilgrims. The uphill trail to the temple through dense oak forest is a pleasant short trek that can be completed in 20–30 minutes from the road. The viewpoint beside the temple is excellent for sunrise and sunset photography.
October to March for clear Himalayan views. Navratri (March/April and Oct) for the main festival. March to June for pleasant trekking weather. Avoid monsoon for the forest trail.
