A Charming Himalayan Village at 2620 Metres Famous for Apple Orchards and Bhagirathi Views
Harsil Village is the main settlement in the Harsil Valley, situated at 2620 metres on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, 72 km from Uttarkashi. The village is famous for its extensive apple orchards, introduced by Frederick "Pahari" Wilson — a British adventurer who settled here in the 19th century and established apple cultivation in the valley. The apples of Harsil are among the best in Uttarakhand.
The village became famous after Raj Kapoor shot parts of the film Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985) here. Harsil offers stunning views of the Bhagirathi gorge, snow-capped peaks, and dense forests. The Satyanarayan Temple in the village is a local pilgrimage site. The village also serves as a base for trekkers heading to Gangotri (25 km) and other higher-altitude destinations.
