Where Karna Worshipped Lord Shiva – Ancient Shivalinga Temple at the Alaknanda-Pindar Confluence
Karneshwar Mahadev Temple is an ancient and revered Lord Shiva temple located at the sacred Karnaprayag sangam — the confluence of the Alaknanda and Pindar rivers in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The temple is deeply connected to the Mahabharata legend of Karna, the great warrior and son of the Sun God, who is said to have performed intense penance and worshipped Lord Shiva at this very spot. It is believed that Karna prayed to Shiva here to receive the divine armour (kavach) and earrings (kundala) that made him invincible. The presiding deity of the temple is a naturally formed Shivalinga that is worshipped with great reverence.
The temple stands at the edge of the sangam ghat, and the sound of the two sacred rivers merging nearby creates a spiritually charged atmosphere. Devotees who take a dip at the sangam invariably visit Karneshwar Mahadev for darshan and puja. The temple is active with regular daily rituals — morning and evening aartis draw devoted pilgrims. During Maha Shivaratri, the temple sees large gatherings of devotees from across Garhwal and Kumaon. The temple architecture follows the traditional Garhwali style. Combined with the Uma Devi Temple at the same sangam, Karneshwar Mahadev completes the spiritual circuit of Karnaprayag.
Year-round. Maha Shivaratri (February/March) for the grand festival. May to June and September to November for pilgrimage season. Early morning aarti (6–7 AM) offers the most spiritually immersive experience.
