A Quiet Hill Town on the Banks of Lohawati River, Rich in History and Natural Beauty
Lohaghat is a picturesque hill town in Champawat district of Uttarakhand, situated on the banks of the Lohawati River at an altitude of about 1814 metres. It serves as the main gateway and base town for visits to Abbott Mount (12 km away) and also to Mayawati Ashram (9 km). The town is steeped in history and mythology — the ruins of the legendary Banasur Fort nearby are associated with the Mahabharata-era demon king Banasura. The surrounding forests and river valley create a serene setting that attracts nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
Lohaghat was also historically significant during the British era as a rest stop on the route to Pithoragarh and Tibet. The Advaita Ashram at Mayawati, founded by disciples of Swami Vivekananda in 1899, is located just 9 km from Lohaghat and is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Vedanta followers. The town has a weekly market, good local eateries and comfortable guesthouses making it an ideal base for exploring the region. The Lohawati River offers pleasant riverside walks.
March to June and September to November are ideal. The town is accessible year-round. Winters (December–February) can be cold but offer snow views.
