Bageshwar (altitude ~950m) is one of Kumaon's oldest pilgrimage towns, sitting at the sacred confluence of the Saryu and Gomti rivers in the Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand. The town takes its name from Lord Shiva's tiger form — Bageshwar (Bagh = tiger, Ishwar = Lord Shiva). The Bagnath Temple, a 7th-century Shiva shrine mentioned in ancient texts, is the spiritual centre of the town and draws lakhs of pilgrims throughout the year.
Beyond pilgrimage, Bageshwar is the base for three major glacier treks — Pindari (38 km from Song base), Kafni (40 km) and Sundardhunga (38 km), all starting within an hour of the town. The Baijnath Shiva Temple (22 km, 12th-century Katyuri architecture on the Gomti river bank) and Kausani (35 km, 350km Himalayan panorama) are the most popular day trips from Bageshwar. The Uttarayani Fair, held every Makar Sankranti (January), is one of Kumaon's largest traditional fairs with thousands of pilgrims taking a holy dip at the Sangam.
Bageshwar is famous for the Bagnath Temple — a 7th-century Shiva shrine at the confluence of the Saryu and Gomti rivers — and the Uttarayani Fair (Makar Sankranti, January), one of Kumaon's largest traditional melas. It is also the main gateway to the Pindari, Kafni and Sundardhunga glacier treks. Baijnath Shiva Temple (12th century, 22 km away) and Kausani sunrise viewpoint (35 km) are popular day trips.
March to June is ideal — pleasant weather (15–25°C), clear Himalayan views and the trekking season for Pindari and Kafni glaciers. September to November offers post-monsoon lush greenery and crisp mountain air. January is special for the Uttarayani Fair (Makar Sankranti). December–February is cold (0–10°C) but very peaceful for pilgrimage. Monsoon (July–August) brings heavy rain and trekking is not recommended.
Bageshwar is approximately 440 km from Delhi — 12–13 hours by road via Moradabad, Haldwani, Almora and Kausani.
