Punjab — the Land of Five Rivers (Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej) — is India's most prosperous and culturally vibrant state, stretching across the fertile plains of northwestern India. The birthplace of Sikhism, the Green Revolution, Bhangra music and Punjabi cuisine, Punjab combines profound spiritual heritage with warm-hearted hospitality that is legendary across the subcontinent. Its fields of golden wheat, mustard and sugarcane, its grand gurudwaras, its bustling food streets and its electrifying folk traditions make Punjab a destination unlike any other in India.
At the heart of Punjab tourism is Amritsar — the holiest city of Sikhism and home to the magnificent Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib). Built in 1604 by Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the Golden Temple is covered in 750 kg of pure gold leaf and is reflected in the sacred Amrit Sarovar (Pool of Nectar) that surrounds it. Over 100,000 pilgrims and tourists visit every day, making it one of the most visited religious sites in the world — more than the Vatican or the Taj Mahal. The atmosphere at dawn, when the temple glows golden in the first light and the Gurbani (sacred hymns) echo across the lake, is profoundly moving and spiritually transformative.
Beyond the Golden Temple, Amritsar holds Jallianwala Bagh — the historic garden and memorial where British troops massacred 379+ peaceful civilians in 1919, a defining moment in India's independence movement. The Wagah Border Retreat Ceremony on the India-Pakistan border 30 km from Amritsar is one of the most electrifying patriotic spectacles in the world — thousands of spectators, high-kicking BSF soldiers and the thunderous lowering of two national flags at sunset. The Durgiana Temple (Silver Temple), Gobindgarh Fort and the vibrant Hall Bazaar complete the Amritsar experience.
Anandpur Sahib — 90 km from Chandigarh in the Shivalik foothills — is the birthplace of the Khalsa (the Sikh brotherhood), founded by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699. The Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib here is one of the five takhts (seats of temporal authority) of Sikhism. The Hola Mohalla festival at Anandpur Sahib (March) is an astonishing display of Sikh martial arts, horse riding and devotional music. Punjab tour packages from Tour Venture India cover all these landmarks with expert local guides, comfortable stays and the best Punjabi food at every meal.
The Golden Temple — covered in 750 kg of pure gold leaf — is the holiest shrine of Sikhism and one of the most visited places on Earth. The dawn atmosphere, with hymns echoing over the Amrit Sarovar lake and the first light turning the shrine gold, is one of the most spiritually moving experiences in India.
The Wagah Border Retreat — held every evening at sunset on the India-Pakistan border — is one of India's most electrifying experiences. BSF soldiers perform precision drills and high kicks as thousands of spectators chant patriotic slogans. Arrive 2 hours early to secure grandstand seats.
Jallianwala Bagh — where British troops fired on peaceful civilians in 1919 — is a deeply moving national memorial. The bullet-marked walls, the narrow entrance passage and the Martyrs Well are preserved as they were in 1919. A sobering and essential stop on every Punjab tour.
Harike Wetland and Bird Sanctuary — Punjab's largest wetland at the confluence of the Beas and Sutlej rivers — is a Ramsar site hosting 350+ bird species including flamingo, pelican, Siberian crane, bar-headed geese and 25+ species of duck in winter.
Anandpur Sahib — the City of Divine Bliss in the Shivalik foothills — is the birthplace of the Khalsa brotherhood (1699). The Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib is a major Sikh pilgrimage site. The Hola Mohalla festival in March is a breathtaking display of Sikh martial arts and devotional music.
Amritsar is the food capital of Punjab — Lawrence Road and Hall Bazaar come alive at night with tandoor smoke and the aroma of Amritsari Kulcha, Butter Chicken, Lassi and Fish. A food walk in Amritsar is one of the best culinary experiences in north India.
Gobindgarh Fort in Amritsar is an 18th-century Sikh fort now open as a heritage museum — with a wax museum, armory, arts and crafts market, sound and light show, and Punjabi folk performances. An evening at Gobindgarh Fort is a lively immersion into Punjabi heritage and culture.
Patiala — the royal city of the Sikh Maharajas — is home to the stunning Qila Mubarak (Blessed Fort), Moti Bagh Palace, Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors) museum and the famous Patiala Peg (the large measure of whisky named after Maharaja Bhupinder Singh). A fascinating royal Punjabi heritage experience.
The best time to visit Punjab — pleasant temperatures (8-25°C), perfect for Golden Temple visits, Wagah Border Retreat and Amritsar food walks. November brings the spectacular Gurpurab (Guru Nanak Jayanti) — the Golden Temple is decorated with 100,000 lights and lakhs of pilgrims arrive for the celebrations. December-January sees the Golden Temple shimmering in morning mist — a profoundly magical atmosphere for devotees and tourists alike.
March brings the Hola Mohalla festival at Anandpur Sahib — Sikh martial arts, horse riding and devotional singing. April 13 is Baisakhi — Punjab's harvest festival and the anniversary of the founding of the Khalsa. Celebrated with massive processions, bhangra dancing, langar feasts and fireworks at gurudwaras across Punjab. The Golden Temple on Baisakhi is an unforgettable experience.
May-June is very hot (40-45°C) in Punjab's plains — not recommended for outdoor sightseeing. The Golden Temple, however, can be visited any time as it is open 24 hours. Monsoon (July-September) brings relief with temperatures around 30-35°C and the fields turn lush green — a beautiful time to see Punjab's agricultural landscape. Hotel rates are significantly lower in this period.
