820 sq km Tiger Reserve with Elephants, Tigers, Leopards and 315+ Bird Species
Rajaji National Park is a sprawling 820 sq km wildlife reserve located between Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun in the Shivalik foothills of Uttarakhand. Declared a Tiger Reserve in 2015, Rajaji is one of the finest wildlife destinations in North India, home to tigers, Asian elephants, leopards, bears, deer and over 315 species of birds.
The park was named after C. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji), the last Governor-General of India. It comprises three former sanctuaries — Rajaji, Motichur and Chilla — merged into one reserve. The park straddles the Ganga River and the dense sal forests of the Shivalik range. The Chilla Range on the east bank of the Ganga and the Motichur Range on the west are the most visited zones.
Rajaji is particularly famous for its large herds of Asian Elephants — one of the highest densities of wild elephants in North India. The evening elephant crossings across the Ganga are a spectacular wildlife experience. Tigers are also present and sightings have increased significantly after the Tiger Reserve designation.
February to April is the best time for wildlife sightings — dry season, animals congregate near water sources. November to January is pleasant weather with good bird watching. The park closes during monsoon (July 1 to November 14). Book safaris in advance online through the Rajaji Tiger Reserve website.
