Cradled in the north-eastern hills of India, Manipur — the Jewel of India — is a land of extraordinary natural beauty, living history and vibrant tribal culture. As experienced tour operators in Manipur, Tour Venture India crafts immersive Manipur tour packages that reveal every facet of this remarkable state — from the ancient ramparts of Kangla Fort and the serene floating islands of Loktak Lake, to the world's only floating national park at Keibul Lamjao and the wildflower-draped heights of Dzukou Valley. The state is the birthplace of polo, the origin of Manipuri classical dance, and the site of one of Asia's most significant World War II turning points.
Loktak Lake — India's largest freshwater lake — is the state's most iconic attraction. Its surface is studded with phumdis, circular floating islands of soil, vegetation and organic matter unique to this lake. The phumdis support the world's only floating national park, Keibul Lamjao, which is the last refuge of the critically endangered Sangai deer (brow-antlered deer, Manipur's state animal). Sunset boat rides across Loktak Lake, with the misty Manipur hills as a backdrop and a stay at the floating Sendra Island resort, rank among India's most unforgettable travel experiences.
Kangla Fort, the ancient seat of Manipuri kings for 2,000 years, stands at the heart of Imphal — a sacred site of extraordinary historical significance. The fort contains the Kangla Temple, the Nongsha Hairemba shrine and the famous Kangla Sha (twin dragon statues). Nearby, the INA Memorial at Moirang commemorates the site where the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) under Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose first hoisted the Indian tricolour on Indian soil on April 14, 1944 — making it a deeply patriotic pilgrimage destination. The Imphal War Cemetery, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, honours 1,600 Allied soldiers of the 1944 Imphal-Kohima Campaign.
The Shirui Lily Festival (May, Ukhrul) celebrates the Shirui Lily (Lilium mackliniae) — an endemic flower found only on the Shirui Kashong Peak and listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. The Dzukou Valley, straddling the two states, is one of north-east India's finest high-altitude treks — a carpet of seasonal wildflowers, rhododendrons and the rare Dzukou lily at 2,452 m. Our Manipur tour operators manage your Inner Line Permit, tribal area permits for Ukhrul and Senapati, expert guides, and all logistics ensuring your Manipur package is safe, comfortable and deeply rewarding.
India's largest freshwater lake — famous for unique floating phumdis, Sendra Island resort and magical sunset boat rides.
World's only floating national park — last refuge of the Sangai brow-antlered deer, Manipur's rare state animal.
Ancient Manipuri royal capital (2,000 years) — Kangla Sha dragon statues, Kangla Temple and Nongsha Hairemba shrine.
Where Netaji's Indian National Army hoisted India's first tricolour on Indian soil (April 14, 1944) — a patriotic landmark.
Ukhrul's rare endemic Shirui Lily (Lilium mackliniae) — grows only on Shirui Kashong Peak, celebrated every May.
Wildflower paradise at 2,452 m on the Manipur-Nagaland border — seasonal lilies, rhododendrons and Dzukou lily meadows.
World's only all-women market at Imphal — 5,000+ Meitei women vendors trading textiles, produce and handicrafts since 1533.
Birthplace of classical Manipuri dance (Ras Leela) and polo — Imphal's Kangla Polo Ground is the world's oldest polo ground.
Best time for a Manipur tour — cool, clear weather (8–22°C). Ideal for Loktak Lake boat rides, Kangla Fort sightseeing, Keibul Lamjao Sangai deer safari and Imphal War Cemetery visits. Yaoshang (Manipuri Holi, February–March) and Ningol Chakouba (November) are vibrant Meitei festivals worth experiencing.
March–April brings the Yaoshang festival and pre-monsoon warmth (20–28°C) perfect for Dzukou Valley wildflower trekking. May is the Shirui Lily Festival at Ukhrul — the only time to witness the endemic Shirui Lily in full bloom on Shirui Kashong Peak. An extraordinary seasonal spectacle unique to Manipur.
Heavy monsoon (June–September) with 1,500–2,000 mm rainfall. Loktak Lake reaches its maximum extent and phumdis are most spectacular. Lush green valleys are beautiful for photography. The Lai Haraoba festival (May–June) — an ancient Meitei ritual festival — overlaps with early monsoon. Trekking routes may be slippery.
Imphal Airport (IMF) is the 2nd busiest airport in north-east India — direct flights from Delhi (2.5 hrs), Kolkata (1 hr), Guwahati, Bangalore and Dimapur by IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet. The airport is just 8 km from Imphal city centre.
Nearest railhead: Dimapur (Nagaland), 215 km from Imphal via NH-2. Jiribam (Manipur) also has a narrow-gauge railway station connected to Silchar. From Dimapur, hire taxi or bus to Imphal (~5–6 hrs on NH-2 through Senapati district).
NH-2 (Imphal–Dimapur, 215 km) and NH-37 (Imphal–Silchar, 225 km) are the two main road corridors. From Guwahati it is ~500 km via Nagaland. The Imphal–Moreh road (NH-102) connects to Myanmar. Private taxis and state buses ply from Dimapur, Kohima and Silchar to Imphal.
Manipur State Transport (MST) and private operators run daily buses from Dimapur, Kohima, Silchar and Guwahati to Imphal. The Guwahati–Imphal route (via Nagaland) takes 12–14 hours. Shared Sumo jeeps offer faster connections from Dimapur (~5 hrs) to Imphal city.
