Mythological Sacred Rock at Devprayag – Where King Dashrath Performed Penance Beside the Holy Ganga Confluence
Dashrath Shila is a revered sacred rock situated at Devprayag by the banks of the holy Ganga, right near the famous Devprayag Sangam — the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers. According to Hindu mythology, this is the very spot where King Dashrath, the father of Lord Rama, performed intense meditation and penance (tapasya) in his later years. The rock is therefore considered supremely sacred and is visited by pilgrims who come to pay their respects to the king who fathered the divine Rama.
The site carries a deeply emotional mythological narrative — King Dashrath spent his final days in spiritual contemplation at Devprayag, seeking redemption and peace after the sorrow of sending Lord Rama into exile. The Ganga flows swiftly beside the Shila, its roar adding a powerful spiritual energy to the site. Pilgrims traditionally touch the rock, offer prayers, and take a holy dip at the Sangam nearby. Devprayag, being the topmost of the Panch Prayag on the Alaknanda river system, is already a highly charged sacred destination, and Dashrath Shila adds a deeply personal Ramayana connection to the visit.
October to June is ideal for visiting Devprayag. Ram Navami celebrations at Devprayag are especially meaningful given the Ramayana connection. Monsoon (July–September) is best avoided due to high river levels and road risks, though the sangam is spectacular during this time.
