Ancient Rama Temple in Devprayag – Spiritual Heart of the Town, Steps from the Sacred Ganga Sangam
Shri Raghunath Temple is the most prominent and ancient temple of Devprayag, dedicated to Lord Rama (Raghunath — a revered name of Rama meaning "Lord of the Raghu dynasty"). Located in the heart of Devprayag town, the temple is the spiritual focal point of this sacred place and has been a centre of Vaishnava devotion for centuries. The temple is said to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya during his journey through the Himalayas, lending it both Vaishnavite and Advaitic significance.
The temple complex houses idols of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman, and is a mandatory stop for pilgrims visiting Devprayag. The architecture is in the traditional Garhwali temple style with a distinctive shikhara (spire). The temple sits in the narrow lanes of old Devprayag town, just minutes from the Sangam ghats, and the sound of the Ganga is ever-present. Morning and evening aarti at Raghunath Temple are deeply moving experiences, especially during Ram Navami when the entire town erupts in devotion. The temple also serves as the seat of the Rawals (hereditary priests) of Devprayag.
Ram Navami (March–April) is the most auspicious time, celebrated with great fanfare at this temple. October to June is the best overall period for visiting Devprayag. Morning aarti (around 7 AM) and evening aarti (around 7 PM) are the best times for darshan and a spiritual experience.
