Peaceful Dam on Sharda River in Udham Singh Nagar – Local Picnic Spot & Bird Watching Area in the Terai Plains Near Nanakmatta
Hempur Dam is a small dam built across the Sharda River (also called the Sarda River) near the town of Nanakmatta in Udham Singh Nagar district, Uttarakhand. It is one of the many barrages and small dams that harness the waters of the Sharda and its tributaries for irrigation of the fertile Terai agricultural lands below. The dam creates a scenic backwater area that is popular among locals as a picnic spot and nature retreat, particularly in the cooler months from October to March.
The area around Hempur Dam is surrounded by the characteristic mixed Terai forest of sal, teak, and shisham trees, which attracts a variety of resident and migratory birds. The tranquil waters of the reservoir are home to various fish species and water birds, including kingfishers, herons, cormorants, and egrets. For pilgrims visiting Nanakmatta Gurudwara, a short detour to Hempur Dam offers a peaceful natural experience in the Terai landscape. The dam is located a few kilometres from Nanakmatta and can be easily visited as a half-day outing from the gurudwara.
October to March for pleasant weather and bird watching. November to February for peak migratory bird season when the backwaters attract ducks, geese, and waders. Early morning visits are best for bird watching. Avoid peak summer (April–June) when temperatures in the Terai can exceed 40°C.
