Historic Gurudwara in Udham Singh Nagar – Marking the Divine Visit of Guru Nanak Dev Ji with Sacred Sarovar & Ancient Pippal Tree
Nanakmatta Gurudwara (also known as Gurudwara Sri Nanakmatta Sahib) is one of the most revered Sikh shrines in Uttarakhand, located in the town of Nanakmatta in Udham Singh Nagar district, at the foothills of the Kumaon Himalayas. The gurudwara is built around a sacred site that marks the visit of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, during his travels (known as Udasis). According to tradition, Guru Nanak Dev Ji visited this place and performed miracles here, and a massive ancient pippal tree under which he is believed to have meditated still stands at the gurudwara complex.
The gurudwara houses a beautiful sacred sarovar (holy pond) — known as Nanakmatta Lake — whose waters are believed to have healing and purifying properties. The entire complex is maintained by the Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and receives thousands of Sikh pilgrims throughout the year, especially on Gurpurab (the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak). The town of Nanakmatta is believed to be the original site of a major mathematical and astronomical school (Mathura) that was blessed by Guru Nanak's visit. The gurudwara offers free langar (community kitchen) to all visitors.
October to March for pleasant weather. Gurpurab (November, Guru Nanak's birthday) is the most auspicious and festive time with large gatherings of pilgrims. April to June is also good but hot. Monsoon (July–September) is manageable as the site is in the plains.
