About Pilibhit Tiger Reserve

Pilibhit Tiger Reserve is one of India's newest Project Tiger reserves, declared in 2014, located in Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh, sharing its northern boundary with Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand (where Nanakmatta is located). The reserve covers an area of approximately 730 sq km of Terai grasslands, sal forests, and wetlands along the Nepal border. It is one of the best places in northern India to spot the Bengal tiger in the wild, along with leopards, swamp deer (barasingha), hispid hare, and over 325 species of birds.

The reserve is located approximately 35 km from Nanakmatta, making it an excellent day-trip or combined destination for pilgrims visiting the gurudwara. The Sharda River and its tributaries flow through the reserve, creating rich riparian habitats. Pilibhit Tiger Reserve is also famous for its elephant population and is an important elephant corridor between Nepal and India. Jeep safaris are available through designated safari zones, giving visitors an excellent chance to spot tigers in their natural Terai habitat.
