A Small but Fascinating Museum Showcasing the Culture and Traditions of Bhotiya Tribes
The Tribal Heritage Museum in Munsiyari is a small but fascinating museum dedicated to the culture, traditions and way of life of the Bhotiya (Shauka) tribal community — the indigenous people of the high-altitude border areas of Pithoragarh district. The Bhotiyas are a trans-Himalayan trading community who historically crossed into Tibet through high mountain passes for trade, and the museum documents this unique heritage.
The museum displays traditional Bhotiya artefacts, costumes, tools, jewellery, textiles and household items. Exhibits include the famous Bhotiya woollen shawls (Daanis) and carpets for which the region is known. The museum provides valuable insights into the semi-nomadic lifestyle of the Bhotiyas who migrated seasonally between the high-altitude summer villages (like Milam, Martoli, Burfu) and winter settlements in the valleys.
Year-round as an indoor museum. Best visited as part of a Munsiyari town tour. May–June and September–November are the most popular visiting months.
