The Sacred Town Where Lord Kedarnath's Idol Resides During Winter, Gateway to Chopta
Ukhimath is a small pilgrimage town in Rudraprayag district, famous as the winter seat of Lord Kedarnath. Every year when the Kedarnath Temple closes (November), the idol of Lord Kedarnath is brought in a ceremonial procession to Ukhimath's Omkareshwar Temple, where it is worshipped throughout the winter until the temple reopens in May.
Ukhimath is also the gateway to Chopta (30 km), Deoria Tal, and the famous Tungnath–Chandrashila trek. The town itself has a peaceful religious atmosphere and several ancient temples. The surrounding landscape with views of snow-capped peaks, the Mandakini River valley and dense forests makes Ukhimath a beautiful base for exploring the Chopta region.
