India's capital is one of the world's great cities — a sprawling, layered metropolis where centuries of empires have left their mark on every street corner, monument and neighbourhood. As the National Capital Territory, the city blends the ancient and the ultra-modern in a way no other Indian city does. From the 73-metre-high Qutub Minar built in 1193 AD to the glass facades of Connaught Place and the wide ceremonial boulevards of the capital district, simultaneously 1,000 years old and strikingly contemporary.
The old walled city, built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan in 1648 as Shahjahanabad, is the historic heart of the city. The Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the seat of Mughal power for nearly 200 years. The Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque, stands nearby and can accommodate 25,000 worshippers. The labyrinthine lanes of Chandni Chowk — once the richest market in Asia — still buzz with spice merchants, wedding jewellers, street food vendors and wholesale traders. Walking through these historic quarters is walking through living history where the Mughal past is palpable in every aroma and archway.
The new capital district, designed by British architect Edwin Lutyens in the early 20th century, presents a complete contrast — wide tree-lined boulevards, imposing government buildings, the India Gate war memorial and the circular Connaught Place shopping district. Humayun's Tomb, built in 1565, is credited as the architectural prototype for the Taj Mahal and is another UNESCO-listed masterpiece. The Akshardham Temple, inaugurated in 2005, is one of the world's largest Hindu temple complexes and draws over 70 lakh visitors annually for its stunning architecture, cultural exhibitions and the Sahaj Anand water show.
The city is also the ideal gateway to the famous Golden Triangle — the trio of the capital, Agra and Jaipur that together form India's most travelled tourist route. The Taj Mahal in Agra is just 200 km from the capital (3 hours by expressway or 2 hours by the fast Gatimaan Express), making it a perfect day trip. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a food lover, a spiritual seeker or a couple on honeymoon, tour packages from Tour Venture India are crafted to give you the best of India's capital city.
Red Fort, Qutub Minar and Humayun Tomb — three UNESCO-listed monuments within city limits, each representing a different era of Indian history.
The world-class Akshardham complex with its carved pink sandstone architecture, cultural boat ride and the spectacular Sahaj Anand water-light show is unmissable.
The city is India's undisputed street food capital — Butter Chicken (invented here), Karim's Kebabs, Paranthe Wali Gali, Chole Bhature and Daulat ki Chaat are legendary.
The capital is the starting point of India's most famous circuit — Delhi, Agra (Taj Mahal, 200 km) and Jaipur (Pink City, 280 km) — the iconic Golden Triangle tour.
Jama Masjid, built by Shahjahan in 1656, is India's largest mosque. The nearby Nizamuddin Dargah hosts mesmerising Sufi qawwali performances every Thursday evening.
Just 45 km away, Sultanpur National Park hosts 250+ bird species including Siberian Crane, Common Crane, flamingos and painted storks in the winter season.
From luxury malls in South Extension to craft emporiums at Dilli Haat, from Sarojini Nagar fashion market to Chandni Chowk wholesale bazaars — the city is a shopper's paradise.
The metro network is one of Asia's finest rapid transit systems — clean, affordable and connecting every major tourist attraction from Red Fort to Qutub Minar to Akshardham.
The best time to visit. Temperatures range 5-25 degrees C, perfect for sightseeing at Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Humayun Tomb and Akshardham. December and January can be foggy, which sometimes delays early morning Agra Taj Mahal trips. The Republic Day parade (26 January) and Delhi half-marathon attract large crowds. October and November are the most comfortable months overall.
Monsoon cools the capital down to 25-35 degrees C and the greenery is beautiful. Sultanpur NP and Okhla Bird Sanctuary are lush and active. Fewer tourists mean shorter queues at popular monuments. The Indira Gandhi Canal fills up and gardens bloom. Some flooding may occur in low-lying areas of Old Delhi during heavy rain, but sightseeing is still possible on most days.
Hot summers with temperatures reaching 45 degrees C. Best for indoor attractions — National Museum, Crafts Museum, National Rail Museum, Akshardham exhibitions and air-conditioned shopping malls. Early morning sightseeing (before 9 am) at Red Fort and India Gate is manageable. Tour package prices are at their lowest, making it a budget-friendly season to visit.
IGI Airport is one of South Asia's busiest airports. Direct flights from Mumbai (2 hrs), Kolkata (2 hrs), Chennai (2.5 hrs) and 60+ international cities. Metro from airport to city centre takes 30 minutes.
Hazrat Nizamuddin and New Delhi railway stations connect to every city in India. The Rajdhani Express from Mumbai takes 16 hours. Gatimaan Express reaches Agra in just 100 minutes, perfect for Taj Mahal day trips.
Connected by National Highways to Agra (200 km, 3 hrs via Yamuna Expressway), Jaipur (280 km, 4.5 hrs), Chandigarh (250 km, 4 hrs) and Haridwar (220 km, 4 hrs). Multiple ISBT bus terminals are available with services to all NCR and nearby states.
The metro network covers 390 km with 286 stations — the best way to reach Red Fort (Chandni Chowk station), Qutub Minar station, Akshardham and India Gate cheaply and quickly.
