About — India's Only Coral Atoll Union Territory
Lakshadweep — officially a Union Territory of India — is an archipelago of 36 coral islands, islets and atolls scattered across the Arabian Sea, roughly 200–440 km off the southwest coast of Kerala. The name means "One Hundred Thousand Islands" in Malayalam and Sanskrit. With a total land area of just 32 sq km, it is India's smallest Union Territory by area — yet its lagoon area spans over 4,200 sq km of some of the purest turquoise water on Earth.
The islands are coral atolls — rings of coral surrounding a central lagoon — making them unique in Indian geography. This geology supports one of Asia's richest coral reef ecosystems: over 600 species of fish, 78 species of coral, whale sharks, spinner dolphins, green sea turtles, hawksbill turtles and manta rays. The Lakshadweep Sea (also called the Laccadive Sea) surrounding these islands is among the clearest waters in the Indian Ocean, with underwater visibility of 20–40 metres — ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling.
Only 11 of the 36 islands are inhabited. The capital is Kavaratti, home to the famous Ujra Mosque and Marine Aquarium. Agatti is the only island with an airport. Bangaram is a pristine uninhabited island with one exclusive resort. Kadmat is the water sports hub. Minicoy, the southernmost island, has the iconic 1885 lighthouse and a unique Maldivian-influenced culture. The culture of the islands is predominantly Muslim, with deep roots in Arab and Maldivian maritime traditions. Best Time to Visit Lakshadweep — Month-by-Month Guide
Weather is perfect (25°C–30°C), seas are calm, visibility is 20–40 m underwater. Best for diving, snorkeling, island-hopping and beach activities. Peak season: December–January. Best season for our tour packages.
Still excellent for water sports — sea is calm, visibility good. Slightly hotter (32°C–36°C). Pre-monsoon season sees fewer crowds and better rates. Good for diving and coral reef exploration.
Heavy rains and rough Arabian Sea. Inter-island boat services suspended. Most water sports shut down. Passenger ship sailings are irregular. We strongly advise avoiding this period for island travel.

Agatti Airport (IATA: AGX) is the only airport — daily flights from Kochi (1.5 hrs) by Air India Regional and IndiGo. From Agatti, other islands are reached by speedboat or helicopter.

Food & Practical Tips for Your Island Trip
What to Eat
The cuisine is coconut-forward and seafood-rich. Must-try dishes include Tuna curry (Mas Riha) — freshly caught from the Laccadive Sea and cooked in coconut milk with local spices. Octopus fry, lobster and reef fish are available at island resorts. Coconut toddy (fermented palm sap) is a local specialty, though alcohol is generally not served on inhabited islands — Bangaram Island Resort is the exception, as a resort island.
Vegetarian options are available but limited — inform us in advance and we coordinate with your island resort for dietary requirements. All our packages include specified meals (breakfast + dinner) at the accommodation.
Practical Tips
- Dress modestly on inhabited islands — these are conservative Muslim communities. Swimwear only at designated beach areas.
- No plastic bags — the islands have strict single-use plastic bans. Carry a reusable bag.
- Carry cash — ATMs are limited to Kavaratti and Agatti. Card payments not accepted everywhere.
- Mobile connectivity — BSNL network works. Private operators (Jio, Airtel) have limited or no coverage on smaller islands.
- Respect coral reefs — do not stand on or touch coral. Our guides enforce responsible snorkeling and diving practices.
- Photography — avoid photographing local residents, especially women, without permission.
