About Dodital Lake

Dodital is a freshwater alpine lake at 3,307 metres in the Uttarkashi district — one of the most beautiful and least-crowded high-altitude lakes in Uttarakhand. It is famous for the rare golden mahseer (Tor putitora) fish and is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ganesha.

Surrounded by dense forests of oak, rhododendron, and deodar, Dodital sits in a bowl-shaped valley below the high ridges of the Garhwal Himalaya. The lake is around 1 km in circumference and has crystal-clear water fed by snow melt and mountain springs. The golden mahseer — a protected fish that swims in the shallows — is a rare and iconic sight. The forest around the lake is rich in birdlife including Himalayan monal, koklass pheasant, and various raptors.

The most popular approach is from Sangamchatti (25 km from Uttarkashi) — a 2-day trek through Agoda village. The trek is moderate in difficulty and suitable for fit beginners with basic gear. Advanced trekkers can continue from Dodital over the Darwa Pass (4,150m) to Hanumanchatti on the Yamunotri route.
