About Maneri Dam, Uttarkashi

Maneri Dam is a hydroelectric barrage built across the Bhagirathi river, 4 km upstream from Uttarkashi town. Set in a narrow Himalayan gorge with dense deodar forests on both banks, it offers one of the most photogenic viewpoints in the Uttarkashi region — and is a quick, easy excursion from town.

The dam is part of the Maneri-Bhali Hydroelectric Project, a two-stage power project on the Bhagirathi. Stage I is at Maneri (near Uttarkashi), and Stage II is at Bhali (downstream, near Uttarkashi town). Together they generate around 90 MW of power for Uttarakhand. The dam creates a small reservoir that fills up beautifully during and after the monsoon, turning a brilliant turquoise-green against the dark forested hillsides.

For visitors, Maneri Dam is primarily a scenic viewpoint and photography spot. The road from Uttarkashi to Maneri runs alongside the Bhagirathi through a narrow valley — the drive itself is picturesque with river views and mountain scenery. The dam also serves as a gateway to the Maneri-Bhali Stage I powerhouse area and is on the route to Gangotri.

Viewpoint & Photography

The best viewpoint at Maneri Dam is from the road bridge just above the dam — you can look upstream into the narrow Bhagirathi gorge, framed by dark green deodar forests and bare rocky cliffs. The reservoir water catches a turquoise-green colour in good light that contrasts beautifully with the brown and green mountains.

Best time for photography: Early morning (7–9 AM) when mist often sits in the valley and soft light falls on the water. October–November has the clearest skies and most vivid colours after monsoon sediment settles. The gorge walls are particularly dramatic in winter with patches of snow on higher ridges.

Note: The dam structure itself is restricted. Photography from the public road bridge is permitted. Do not cross into the hydroelectric project restricted zone.
