Tiny Himalayan Village at 3,048m – The Only Base Camp for Both Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara and Valley of Flowers National Park
Ghangaria (also spelled Govind Dham or Gurudwara Govind Dham) is a small but strategically vital Himalayan village located at an altitude of 3,048 metres in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. It is the sole base camp and transit point for two of the most celebrated high-altitude destinations in the Indian Himalayas — Gurudwara Hemkund Sahib (6 km further up at 4,329m) and Valley of Flowers National Park (3.5 km away). Every pilgrim and trekker heading to either destination must pass through and usually stay overnight at Ghangaria.
Despite its small size, Ghangaria is well-equipped with guesthouses, dharamshalas run by the Gurudwara management, dhabas, medical facilities, and porter/pony services. The village is surrounded by dense forests of birch, rhododendron, and alpine shrubs. The sound of the Pushpawati river rushing below the village adds to the mountain ambience. There are no motorable roads to Ghangaria — the only way to reach it is by 13 km trek from Govindghat or by helicopter service available in season. The Ghangaria Gurudwara provides free langar (community kitchen) to all pilgrims, a touching tradition of Sikh hospitality at high altitude.
June to October when the trek route is open. July to August for Valley of Flowers in full bloom. June and September for clearer weather. The entire area including Ghangaria is inaccessible in winter (November to May) due to heavy snowfall.
Nearest railway: Rishikesh (270 km). Bus/taxi to Govindghat, then 13 km trek to Ghangaria.
13 km trail from Govindghat through forest and river valley. Ponies and porters available at Govindghat.
Helicopter service runs from Govindghat to Ghangaria in season. Saves 13 km of uphill trek.
