Valley of Flowers — UNESCO Heritage of India
The Valley of Flowers is one of India's most breathtaking natural wonders — a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of 3,352 to 3,658 metres. This extraordinary valley is celebrated for its vast meadows carpeted with over 500 species of endemic alpine wildflowers that burst into bloom every monsoon season (July–September), painting the entire valley in vivid shades of violet, yellow, pink, orange and white.
The valley was first scientifically documented by British mountaineer Frank Smythe in 1931, who discovered it after getting separated from his team during a descent from Kamet peak. He was so overwhelmed by the beauty of the wildflowers that he returned the following year with botanist R.L. Holdsworth and named it the "Valley of Flowers." The valley was declared a National Park in 1982, added to the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1988), and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.
