Road-Head on the Alaknanda River – Gateway to Hemkund Sahib Yatra & Valley of Flowers Trek, 20 km from Badrinath Dham
Govindghat is a small town situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River at an altitude of approximately 1,828 metres, located about 20 km before Badrinath on the main Char Dham road (NH58) in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. It is the road-head and official trek starting point for the two most famous high-altitude pilgrimage and nature destinations of the region — Gurudwara Hemkund Sahib and Valley of Flowers National Park. From Govindghat, a 13 km trek leads to Ghangaria base camp, from where separate trails lead to Hemkund Sahib (6 km) and Valley of Flowers (3.5 km).
Govindghat itself has a prominent Gurudwara on the banks of the Alaknanda, run by the Sikh Gurdwara Prabandh Committee, which provides free accommodation and langar to thousands of pilgrims during the yatra season. The town is the logistical hub for the trek — ponies, porters, and helicopter bookings are all arranged from here. The sight of thousands of pilgrims assembling at Govindghat at the crack of dawn during the peak yatra season (July–August) is a moving and unforgettable spectacle. The Alaknanda river at Govindghat is swift and majestic, adding to the dramatic mountain gateway atmosphere.
June to October for the Hemkund Sahib yatra and Valley of Flowers season. July to August is peak pilgrimage season but crowded. June and September offer better weather and fewer crowds. Early morning departure from Govindghat is recommended for the trek to Ghangaria.
