What is the Kwani Bugyal Trek Like?
The Kwani Bugyal trek begins at Auli top (2,519m) near the upper ski slopes. For the first kilometre the trail moves through a dense forest of oak, rhododendron and deodar. This section is the steepest — the path narrows and climbs sharply. Trekkers who have only walked on flat ground should take frequent breaks here and set a slow, steady pace.
At around 3,056m the forest opens abruptly into the wide green expanse of Gurso Bugyal. From here the meadow continues upward. The last stretch to Kwani Bugyal is more gradual — a rolling grassy ridge with increasingly wide views. When the meadow opens fully at 3,380m, the panorama of snow peaks appears suddenly and completely — Nanda Devi, Kamet, Trishul and Dunagiri ranged across the horizon. On clear days in October and November the visibility can exceed 200 km.
The descent follows the same trail and is significantly easier — most trekkers complete it in 1.5–2 hours. Total round-trip time including rest stops: 5–6 hours for an average-fitness adult.
Season-wise Experience
- May–July: The meadow is carpeted with alpine wildflowers — primulas, anemones, brahmakamal, and wild roses. The air is cool (10–18°C at the top) and the trail is clear.
- October–November: Post-monsoon skies are the clearest. Snow peaks reflect sharp light, making this the best season for photography. Temperatures drop to 2–8°C at the summit.
- December–March: The meadow is under 2–4 feet of snow. The forest section can be icy. Only experienced trekkers with snowshoes should attempt it, always with a local guide.
Is Kwani Bugyal Suitable for Beginners and Families?
Kwani Bugyal is rated Moderate to Challenging. The elevation gain of 860 metres over 3–4 km makes it noticeably harder than a hill-station walk. That said, the trail has no technical sections — there are no ropes, ladders, or exposed ridges. It is purely a hiking trail through forest and meadow.
- Fit beginners with basic stamina can complete the trek in summer with a guide. Go slowly, rest often, and carry enough water.
- Families with children above 10 years can attempt the trek in summer — children below that age will struggle with the steep initial section.
- Senior trekkers without altitude experience should consult a doctor first. The altitude (3,380m) can cause mild symptoms — headache, slight breathlessness — even in otherwise healthy adults.
- Winter trekking is not recommended for first-timers or families — trail-finding in snow requires experience.
