Gurso Bugyal Auli — Scenic Alpine Meadow at 3,056 Metres
Gurso Bugyal is one of the most accessible and rewarding alpine meadows in the Garhwal Himalayas, located just 3 km from Auli in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. Sitting at an altitude of 3,056 metres (10,026 ft), this pristine high-altitude meadow offers a close-up, crowd-free alternative to Auli's popular ski slopes — and arguably even better views of the Himalayan peaks. The word Bugyal comes from the Garhwali language and simply means "high-altitude grassland."
From the moment you step onto the trail, Gurso Bugyal feels different from the typical tourist circuit. The path winds through dense groves of oak (Quercus semecarpifolia), rhododendron, and blue pine before opening suddenly onto an expansive rolling meadow. In summer the grass is a vivid green, dotted with wildflowers; in winter it disappears under a thick blanket of snow. At the top of the meadow, you are rewarded with one of the finest unobstructed panoramas of Himalayan giants in all of Uttarakhand.
The meadow sits directly opposite the towering wall of peaks that includes Nanda Devi (7,816m) — India's highest peak — alongside Kamet (7,756m), Mana (7,272m), Dunagiri (7,066m), Nilkantha (6,596m), and Dronagiri (7,066m). On a clear day you can count more than fifteen peaks from a single vantage point. That view alone justifies the 3 km climb.

How to Trek to Gurso Bugyal from Auli — Route, Difficulty & Tips
The Gurso Bugyal trek is one of the finest short treks in Uttarakhand. It takes you from Auli's ski slopes into a quiet oak forest and then out onto an open alpine meadow with jaw-dropping mountain views. Here is everything you need to know before you set out.
Trek Route — Step by Step
This is the trailhead. Reach Auli top by the Auli Ropeway from Joshimath — it drops you right here. Or drive the 16 km road from Joshimath via Auli village. The trek begins behind the GMVN Tourist Rest House. Fill your water bottles here — there is no water on the trail ahead.
The first 1.5 km climbs steadily through a dense mixed forest of banj oak (Quercus leucotrichophora), rhododendron, and blue pine. The canopy is cool and shaded — take it steady. Watch for the Himalayan Monal (state bird of Uttarakhand) foraging at the forest edge in the morning.
The trees thin out and the snow peaks suddenly appear. This is a natural rest point — many trekkers stop here for water and a snack. From here the meadow opens up, the gradient eases, and you can already see the arc of peaks ahead.
The meadow unfolds in every direction. The full panorama of the Garhwal Himalaya opens up — Nanda Devi (7,816m) towers directly opposite, flanked by Kamet, Mana, Dunagiri, Nilkantha, and Trishul. On a clear morning this is one of the finest views in all of India. Spend as long as you like; return by the same trail.
Trek Difficulty & Fitness Level
The Gurso Bugyal trek is rated Easy to Moderate. The total elevation gain is approximately 537 metres over 3 km. The trail is well-defined and never technical. Children above 6 years old and senior trekkers in reasonable health complete it comfortably. The only challenge is the sustained uphill gradient in the forest section — take it slow, rest when needed, and you will be fine.
- Total distance: 3 km one way (6 km return)
- Elevation gain: ~537m (Auli at 2,519m to Gurso Bugyal at 3,056m)
- Time required: 1.5–2 hours up, 1–1.5 hours down; allow 3.5–4.5 hours for the full round trip
- Trail surface: Dirt path through forest, grass and rock on the meadow
- No technical equipment required — trekking poles are helpful but not essential
