The Nanda Devi View Point at Auli is a natural mountain panorama point in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, where visitors can see Nanda Devi (7,816 metres / 25,643 ft) — India's highest peak and the world's 23rd highest mountain — in clear, direct line of sight. When is the Best Time to See Nanda Devi from Auli?

Nanda Devi is not always visible — clouds, monsoon haze and afternoon mist regularly block the view. Timing your visit correctly is essential.

Best Time of Day

Visit between 6 AM and 9 AM. After 9–10 AM, valley clouds and thermal haze begin rising and often obscure the peaks by mid-morning even in winter. Sunrise — the first 30–45 minutes of light — is when Nanda Devi's snow face glows golden-orange, making it the preferred window for photographers.

Best Season

Oct – Mar Best

Clearest skies post-monsoon. Peaks are fully snow-covered and dramatically lit at sunrise. Visibility can extend 100+ km on very clear days.

Apr – Jun

Clear mornings are possible but afternoon clouds are common. Go early for best chances. Spring wildflowers add colour to the viewpoint surroundings.

Jul – Sep

Monsoon clouds consistently block the view. Most visits during this period see no peaks at all. Not recommended for Nanda Devi views.

Which are the Best Viewpoints to See Nanda Devi near Auli?

Three viewpoints offer progressively better panoramas — each at a higher elevation than the last.

1. Auli Ropeway Top Station — 3,049m

The most accessible viewpoint. Reach by taking the Joshimath–Auli ropeway (4 km, ~20 minutes). The open ski slope area at the top station gives a clear, unobstructed northwest-facing view of Nanda Devi. No trekking required. Best option for families and those short on time.

2. Gurso Bugyal — 3,056m (3 km Trek)

A 3 km trek from Auli top through oak forest, taking 1.5–2 hours one way. The meadow opens to a wide 180° Himalayan panorama including Nanda Devi, Trishul and Dunagiri. Slightly higher than the ropeway top and less obstructed by ski infrastructure. Moderate difficulty — suitable for reasonably fit walkers.

3. Kwani Bugyal — 3,380m (3–4 km Beyond Gurso)

The highest and most expansive viewpoint, at 331 metres above Gurso Bugyal. Provides a true 360° panorama — Nanda Devi, Kamet and the entire Garhwal range. Requires 5–6 hours round trip from Auli. Moderate to Challenging — recommended with a local guide. Rewards with the finest Nanda Devi panorama in the Auli area.

Arrive before 6 AM — first light on Nanda Devi turns the summit pink, then golden
