Riverside Transit Town in Pithoragarh District – Confluence of Kali & Ramganga Rivers, Gateway to Inner Kumaon Himalayas
Thal is a small riverside town situated at the confluence of the Kali (Mahakali) and Ramganga rivers in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, at an altitude of approximately 915 metres. It serves as an important road junction and transit point on the main route from Pithoragarh to Munsiyari (via the Ramganga valley) and also on the route toward Chaukori and Dharchula. The town is a natural stopover for travelers exploring the inner Kumaon Himalayas, who often break their journey here for refreshments or an overnight stay.
The main attraction of Thal is the confluence of the two rivers and the dramatic mountain scenery along the Kali River gorge. The Kali River (which forms the India-Nepal border further north) is particularly scenic in this region, flowing through deep gorges flanked by terraced hillside farms and dense conifer forests. The drive from Thal to Munsiyari is considered one of the most dramatic in Kumaon, with the road climbing steeply through remote villages and forests. Thal also has a local market and weekly bazaar that gives visitors a glimpse into the traditional life of Kumaoni hill communities.
March to June and September to November for pleasant weather and clear river views. April to May is best for the drive to Munsiyari when rhododendrons are in bloom on the hillsides. Avoid monsoon season (July–August) as the mountain roads can be affected by landslides.
