An ancient Shiva cave shrine located at 2,530m altitude, reached via a 14 km moderate trek from Jageshwar Dham. One of the lesser-visited but spiritually significant Shaivite sites in the Kumaon Himalayas, Almora district, Uttarakhand.
Vriddha Jageshwar (also known as Budha Jageshwar — "Old Jageshwar") is an ancient Shiva cave shrine at 2,530m altitude in Almora district, Uttarakhand. Reached via a 14 km moderate trek (3–4 hrs one-way) from Jageshwar Dham at 1,870m, it is regarded as an older and more sacred form of the Jageshwar pilgrimage — traditionally visited together with the main temple complex for full spiritual merit.
Vriddha Jageshwar (meaning "Old Jageshwar") is a naturally formed cave shrine housing a Shivalinga, set amidst dense rhododendron and oak forests in the upper reaches of the Jageshwar valley. The site is far less crowded than the main Jageshwar Dham complex below, making it a preferred destination for pilgrims and trekkers seeking a quieter spiritual experience.
According to local tradition, the shrine at Vriddha Jageshwar predates even the stone temples of Jageshwar Dham, and visiting both sites together is considered particularly auspicious. The trek itself passes through scenic forest terrain with views of the surrounding Kumaon hills.
The trek begins at Jageshwar Dham (1,870m) and ascends through deodar cedar, rhododendron, and oak forests, gaining approximately 660m in elevation to reach Vriddha Jageshwar at 2,530m. The trail is a 14 km round trip (7 km each way), taking approximately 3–4 hours one way at a moderate pace.
