+91-8057146497Uttarakhand — popularly known as "Devbhumi" (Land of the Gods) — is a northern state of India carved out of Uttar Pradesh on 9 November 2000. Nestled in the lap of the mighty Himalayas, the state shares international borders with Nepal to the east and Tibet (China) to the north. It borders the Indian states of Himachal Pradesh to the northwest and Uttar Pradesh to the south. The state capital is Dehradun, while Gairsain serves as the summer capital. Uttarakhand covers an area of 53,483 sq km and is home to over 1 crore people spread across 13 districts.
Uttarakhand is divided into two natural regions — Garhwal (western hills) and Kumaon (eastern hills) — each with its own distinct culture, dialects, and traditions. The state is blessed with the sacred Ganges and Yamuna rivers originating here, ancient Vedic temples, lush valley forests, and towering peaks like Nanda Devi (7,816 m) — the second highest peak in India. Every year, millions of pilgrims, trekkers, and nature lovers choose an Uttarakhand tour package to experience its timeless beauty.
Uttarakhand has one of the richest histories in the Indian subcontinent, with references dating back to the Vedic period. The region was known in ancient texts as "Kedarkhand" (present-day Garhwal) and "Manaskhand" (present-day Kumaon). It was the setting of major events from the Mahabharata — the Pandavas are believed to have passed through the Himalayan routes of Uttarakhand on their way to heaven (Swargarohini).
The region was ruled by several powerful dynasties — the Kuninda Kingdom (3rd century BC), followed by the Katyuri dynasty (7th–11th century AD) which built many ancient temples. The Chand dynasty ruled Kumaon and the Parmar dynasty ruled Garhwal for several centuries.
In the 18th century, the Gurkha kingdom of Nepal invaded and occupied most of Uttarakhand (1790–1815). The British East India Company defeated the Gurkhas in the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814–1816) and developed Dehradun, Mussoorie, Nainital and Ranikhet as hill stations.
After independence, Uttarakhand remained part of Uttar Pradesh for over 50 years. A prolonged movement for a separate hill state finally succeeded and the state was formally created on 9 November 2000 as India's 27th state.
