Gangotri temple is at a high altitude where snow covers the Himalayan peaks and temple, along with ice blocks in the holy river Ganga. The Char Dham temples are open for worship from May to October. The best time to visit Gangotri is from May to October, escaping the monsoon months from July to September. Devotees or tourists need to wear heavy woollens on their trek to Gangotri.

Tourists need to first reach Haridwar or Rishikesh to begin their tour of the temple. If one plans to trek to Gangotri alone among the four Chhota Char Dham pilgrimages, hiring a jeep from Haridwar will be a good idea. The route passes through Rishikesh-Narendranagar-Chamba-Uttarkashi-Taknaur Range Temple.
