One among the Char Dham (meaning four pilgrimages) in Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand, Yamunotri is the first destination in traditional pilgrim route. Thousands of religious tourists every year visit Yamunotri as the beginning abode in Char Dham tour. Dedicated to goddess Yamuna, Yamunotri temple is situated at the altitude of 3,165 meters above sea level in Uttarkashi district. The temple is on the bank of holy river Yamuna who originates from Champasar Glacier 4,421 meters above sea level, 1Km away from Yamunotri temple. Yamunotri is in the opposite side of Gangotri, another pilgrimage of Char Dham series and the second abode in traditional Char Dham route. Nearby Yamunotri temple lies a hot water spring where the devotees cook rice and potato wrapped in cloth dipping it in the hot water. The rice and potato so boiled is offered as Prasad to the god.

According to Hindu mythology, Asit Muni, an ancient sage, lived at Yamunotri. The hilly secluded spot Yamunotri offers spectacular view of Himalayas, beautiful panorama of the landscape and eternal peace to the pilgrims.

Yamunotri is open for visit from May till October, the exact date is every year fixed according to the Hindu calendar. Being a pilgrimage site at high altitude and all covered in snow, Yamunotri is inaccessible during winter. It is recommended to escape the monsoon months because of rainfall, landslide and the rough road though adventurers and devotees both abundantly make trips to Yamunotri and all the pilgrimages of Char Dham during monsoon as well. Summer months May and June and spring months late September and October are the best time for Yamunotri visit.

On Yamunotri visit, Janakichatti is the last spot for vehicles. Janaki Chatti is 5Km from Yamunotri. The 5Km trek is full of fun and abundant beauty offered by the nature.

Surya Kund: Surya Kund nearby Yamunotri temple is the lake where pilgrims cook rice and potato to offer to the deity in Yamunotri temple. The cooked rice is offered as Prasad by the religious tourists back home.

Divya Shila: Divya shila is a huge rock pillar nearby Surya Kund at the entrance of Yamunotri temple. Pilgrims need to worship the Divya Shila before entering Yamunotri temple.

Janaki Chatti: Janaki is another name of goddess Sita, the wife of lord Rama the incarnation of lord Vishnu in Treta Yuga. Janaki Chatti on the way to Yamunotri is a beautiful village from where the trek to Yamunotri begins. The last village in the route to Yamunotri, Janaki chatty is popular for the hot water springs where Char Dham pilgrims take bath.

Hanuman Chatti: Temple dedicated to Hanuman, Hanuman Chhatti is believed to be the place where second Pandava Bheema of Hindu holy epic Mahabharata met with god Hanuman- the monkey form of lord Shiva incarnated to support lord Vishnu who had incarnated in the form of lord Rama during Treta Yuga. Hanuman appeared in Dwapar Yuga in front of Bheema in the form of old Monkey with its tail spread long on the way through which Bheema was going to pick a flower for Draupadi during their exile. Hanuman did so to test the strength of Bheema who boasted about his strength. Not being able to lift the tail of Hanuman, Bheema realized that it was not a normal monkey but lord Shiva himself had come to bless him.

Ranachatti: Rana Chatti, 16Km from Yamunotri, is a small picturesque village on the way to Yamunotri where pilgrims rest and sometimes halt at night. The beautiful village with hospital villagers and painted houses attract the tourists with enchanting environs. Shani Maharaj temple and lake Bugyal Dhinara lie around 3.5Km from Rana Chhatti.

Syanachatti: Syana Chatti is a small beautiful spot on the bank of sacred river Yamuna on the way to Yamunotri temple. Syana Chatti, 18Km from Yamunotri, works as a rest point to the pilgrims to Yamunotri. Pilgrims halt for night stay at Syanachatti.

Lakhamandal: Lakhamandal is 70Km from Yamunotri through Nandgaun on Mussoorie-Yamunotri road. Lakha means hundred thousand and mandal means Shivlingam. Lakhamandal is believed to be the place where Kauravas built a shelter house when they were conspiring about the wax house to burn Pandavas.
