Definition: Bhalu Gaad Waterfall (Hindi: भालू गाड़ जलप्रपात) is a picturesque natural waterfall formed by the Bhalu Gaad stream, located approximately 4 km from Mukteshwar town in Nainital district, Uttarakhand. The waterfall tumbles down rocky boulders through a lush green gorge of dense Himalayan oak and rhododendron forest at around 1,900 metres (6,200 feet) altitude. "Bhalu" means bear in Hindi — a name derived from the Himalayan black bears that inhabit these forests. Entry is free; accessible all year.
The trek to the waterfall descends through one of the most beautiful sections of Kumaon forest in the Mukteshwar area. The trail is well-defined and rated easy, making it suitable for families, senior walkers and first-time trekkers. The path winds beneath a canopy of broad-leaved oak trees, passing through patches of rhododendron that burst into vivid red and pink blooms from February to April. The forest floor is carpeted with ferns and moss-covered boulders, and the sound of the stream grows louder as you approach the falls.
At the base of the waterfall, a natural pool forms in the rocks — a refreshing spot to rest after the trek. The pool is shallow enough for safe wading. The surrounding gorge is heavily forested, creating a cool, shaded microclimate even in the peak of summer. This makes Bhalu Gaad an ideal escape from the heat for visitors in April to June when Mukteshwar temperatures can reach 20–25°C.
For birdwatchers, the Bhalu Gaad forest trail is one of the best spots in the Kumaon Himalaya. Over 200 bird species have been recorded in the Mukteshwar–Ramgarh area (Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History, SACON field surveys), including the Himalayan whistling thrush, chestnut-headed tesia, rufous-bellied niltava, blue-capped redstart and several species of woodpecker and laughingthrush. Early morning treks (6–9 am) offer the best birdwatching opportunities along this route.
The waterfall also holds cultural significance — local villagers consider the Bhalu Gaad stream sacred, and small shrines are occasionally found along the banks. The name connects the site to Kumaon's folklore, where bears (bhalu) are associated with the forests of Mukteshwar. Mukteshwar lies at 2,286 metres (7,500 feet) altitude (Survey of India), while the waterfall at the base of the gorge sits at approximately 1,900 metres. The area is also home to leopards, barking deer, Himalayan goral and many species of butterfly and moth, making it a rewarding destination for nature photography year-round.
