What is Kasar Devi?

Altitude 2,116 m · Crank's Ridge · 8 km from Almora · Almora District, Uttarakhand

Kasar Devi refers to both a village and an ancient temple on Crank's Ridge (2,116 m), Almora district, Uttarakhand — the two are often used interchangeably. The village is 8 km from Almora town.

The site is home to a 2,000-year-old Shakti cave shrine and a scientifically documented anomaly in the Van Allen radiation belt — placing it alongside Machu Picchu and Stonehenge in the same geomagnetic zone. Swami Vivekananda meditated here in 1890; in the 1960s–70s Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens and Timothy Leary were drawn to this ridge, earning it the name Hippie Hill. Entry to the temple is free and open throughout the day.

The Cosmic Energy Zone — What the Science Says

The geomagnetic anomaly at Crank's Ridge is not local folklore. NASA's Van Allen Probes mission documented that certain points on Earth sit within unusual concentrations of the Van Allen radiation belt — charged particles trapped by Earth's magnetic field. Kasar Devi, along with Machu Picchu (Peru) and Stonehenge (England), falls within one such geomagnetic anomaly zone. Researchers and spiritual practitioners alike note that these zones correlate with locations long considered sacred across cultures — a convergence that has drawn scientists and seekers to Crank's Ridge for decades. (Source: Van Allen Probes Mission, NASA; documented in multiple peer-reviewed geomagnetic studies on sacred site locations.)

Kasar Devi Today — A Living Spiritual & Creative Community

Kasar Devi continues to attract global travellers, yoga practitioners, and those seeking deep mountain silence — all while offering stunning panoramic views of Himalayan snow peaks, Almora town, and the Kosi Valley below. The ridge, locally called Crank's Ridge or Hippie Hill, retains a bohemian, creative atmosphere with cafes, yoga studios, and artist spaces that have operated here for decades.

The village is commonly combined with Jageshwar Dham (37 km, 124 ancient Shiva temples documented by the Archaeological Survey of India), Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary (25 km, a 47.07 sq km protected forest) and Kausani (55 km) as part of a broader Kumaon circuit.

Tour Venture India's On-Ground Insight

We have taken groups to this ridge across all four seasons and across many years. A few things we have learned that most travel sites will not tell you:

  • The ridge between 5 AM and 7 AM is a completely different experience — no noise, no vehicles, just dew on the oak canopy and the distant outline of Nanda Devi turning gold. Day visitors arrive after 9 AM and the energy changes completely.
  • The Kasar Devi Temple itself is a small cave shrine — not a grand structure. Its power is in its location and its age, not its architecture. Visit with that expectation and it will not disappoint.
  • Stay on the ridge, not in Almora town. The 8 km feels short on a map but the difference in atmosphere is significant — ridge guesthouses are quieter, cooler, and surrounded by forest.
  • In October–November 2025 our group of 6 recorded temperatures of 7°C at dawn with zero cloud cover — the clearest Himalayan views we have seen from any Kumaon destination.

Why Visit Kasar Devi?

Kasar Devi is unlike most hill destinations in India — it rewards those who slow down, stay longer, and look inward. Updated for 2026 season — here are the main reasons people travel here from across the world.

Cosmic Energy Zone

Crank's Ridge sits within a documented anomaly in the Van Allen radiation belt — a geomagnetic field similar to Machu Picchu and Stonehenge. Many meditators and spiritual practitioners report heightened awareness and deep stillness here that is hard to find elsewhere.

Ancient Kasar Devi Temple

The 2,000-year-old cave shrine of the mother goddess is the spiritual heart of the ridge. Swami Vivekananda meditated here in the late 19th century. The temple is visited by pilgrims and travellers from across the world seeking blessings and stillness.

Himalayan Panoramas

Crank's Ridge offers sweeping views of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Panchachuli and Kedarnath ranges on clear days. The sunrises and sunsets over the snow peaks and Kosi Valley below are genuinely spectacular — among the finest in all of Kumaon.

Hippie Hill Legacy

In the 1960s–70s, Kasar Devi became a global counterculture icon — Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, Timothy Leary and Allen Ginsberg all visited. The area still retains a bohemian, creative atmosphere with cafes, yoga studios and artist spaces along the ridge road.

Almora & Kumaon Circuit

Just 8 km from historic Almora town, the ridge is an ideal base for exploring Chitai Golu Devta Temple, Jageshwar Dham (37 km), Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, and the wider Kumaon heritage circuit.

Yoga & Wellness Retreats

The ridge hosts several yoga centres, meditation retreats and Ayurvedic wellness camps. The combination of high altitude (2,116 m), clean mountain air and the documented geomagnetic field makes it one of India's most established destinations for yoga, mindfulness and inner practices.

When is the Best Time to Visit Kasar Devi?

Crank's Ridge can be visited year-round, but what you experience changes significantly with the season. Information below is verified for 2026 season based on our ground team's observations.

Ideal season. Rhododendrons bloom in pink and red across the ridge and surrounding hills. Temperatures range from 10°C to 22°C. Clear Himalayan views with snow still on distant peaks. Best for outdoor meditation, ridge walks and nature photography. Bird activity in the surrounding forests is at its peak.

July to September — Monsoon Season

Misty, lush and atmospheric. The forest turns vivid green and the ridge is often in the clouds. Roads remain open. Ideal for solo spiritual retreats and those who find the mist atmospheric, but mountain views are frequently obscured by cloud cover. Leeches are active on forest trails.

October to November — Best for Himalayan Views

The most recommended season. Crystal-clear post-monsoon skies reveal the full Himalayan panorama from Nanda Devi to Panchachuli. Golden oak forests, comfortable temperatures (8°C to 18°C) and quiet roads. Best time for photography and the Zero Point viewpoint at nearby Binsar.

December to February — Winter Season

Cold (2°C to 8°C) but deeply meditative. Snow occasionally falls on the ridge. The forest is quiet and the energy is still — perfect for serious meditation retreats. Warm accommodation with bonfires makes it cosy. Suitable for visitors prepared for cold nights.

Kasar Devi Trek — Trails, Difficulty & What to Expect

Kasar Devi is not just a spiritual destination — the oak and rhododendron forests around Crank's Ridge offer some of the most accessible and rewarding short treks in the Kumaon Himalayas. Three main trails exist, ranging from a 2 km easy sunrise walk to a 16 km full-day forest route.

TrekDistanceDifficultyDurationGuide Needed
Crank's Ridge Sunrise Walk2–3 km loopEasy1–1.5 hrsNo
Kasar Devi → Binsar10–12 kmModerate4–5 hrsRecommended
Kasar Devi → Jageshwar14–16 kmHard6–7 hrsMandatory

The oak and rhododendron forests around Crank's Ridge make this one of the most rewarding short-trek areas in the Kumaon Himalayas. These are not technical high-altitude climbs; they are quiet forest walks that take you through communities and landscapes most hill tourists never see.

Tour Venture India recommends combining at least one forest walk with every stay here — even two hours on the ridge at sunrise changes how you understand the place.

Crank's Ridge Sunrise Walk
Distance: 2–3 km loop Difficulty: Easy Duration: 1–1.5 hrs

The most accessible trail from the ridge — a gentle loop along the ridge road and forest edge, best done between 5 AM and 7 AM before day visitors arrive. The trail passes the Kasar Devi Temple, a small cave shrine, and opens onto panoramic views of Nanda Devi, Trishul and the Kosi Valley. Oak and rhododendron canopy throughout. No guide required; wear layers as mornings are cold even in summer.

Kasar Devi to Binsar Forest Trek
Distance: 10–12 km one way Difficulty: Moderate Duration: 4–5 hrs

A beautiful full-day forest trail through dense oak and rhododendron jungle from Crank's Ridge to Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary. The path passes through small Kumaoni hamlets, terraced fields and bird-rich forest — leopard pugmarks are occasionally spotted on the trail in early morning. Ends at Binsar Zero Point at 2,420 m for a 300 km Himalayan panorama. Best done with a local guide arranged by Tour Venture India; cab pickup from Binsar can be arranged.

Kasar Devi to Jageshwar Forest Route
Distance: 14–16 km one way Difficulty: Moderate–Hard Duration: 6–7 hrs

A lesser-known long-distance trail through the cedar-deodar forests between Crank's Ridge and Jageshwar Dham. The trail drops into the Jageshwar Valley, arriving at the cluster of 124 ancient Shiva temples hidden in dense cedar groves. A spiritually and physically rewarding full-day route — recommended only for experienced trekkers; guide mandatory. Tour Venture India can arrange the full day with guide, packed lunch and return cab.

Practical Trek Tips for Kasar Devi

  • Best trekking months: March–June (rhododendrons) and October–November (clear Himalayan views)
  • During monsoon (July–September) trails are slippery and leeches are active — waterproof shoes essential
  • Carry water; small tea stalls exist at Binsar but nothing reliable on the Jageshwar trail
  • Start all treks by 6 AM — afternoon clouds can reduce Himalayan visibility significantly
  • Mobile signal is weak or absent on forest sections — download offline maps before starting
