Tiffin Top Nainital (also called Dorothy's Seat) is a hilltop viewpoint at 2,292 m in Nainital, Uttarakhand. It offers a 360° panoramic view of Naini Lake and the Himalayas. You can reach it by a 4 km trek (1.5–2 hrs) or a horse ride (₹400–600, ~45 min) from Ayarpatta Stand. Entry is free. Best time: October to February for Himalayan peak views.
If you are planning a trip to Nainital and someone asks which viewpoint is the most rewarding, the answer is almost always Tiffin Top. Sitting at 2,292 metres above sea level in the Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand, this hilltop gives you a sweeping 360-degree view — Naini Lake shining below, the seven hills of Nainital encircling the town, and on a clear winter morning, the distant white caps of the Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Panchachuli ranges visible on the horizon.
Tiffin Top is also popularly called Dorothy's Seat. The name comes from Dorothy Kellett, a British artist who would regularly ride up here on horseback to paint landscapes of Nainital in the early 20th century. Dorothy died tragically in a plane crash in 1936, and her husband had a memorial seat placed at this very spot in her memory. That simple stone seat is still here — and it remains one of the most quietly moving things about this place. You can sit where she once sat and look at the same lake and hills she painted.
Unlike Snow View Point, which is reached by a ropeway in a few minutes, Tiffin Top asks a little more of you — either a 45-minute horse ride or a proper 4 km trek. That effort is exactly what keeps this place quieter, more personal, and far more satisfying when you finally get to the top.
The top has an open meadow area with a few benches and the memorial plaque. There is no permanent food stall at the summit — locals sometimes set up small arrangements during peak season, but it is best to carry water and light snacks. Most visitors spend 30–60 minutes at the top before heading back down.
This is also one of the best spots in Nainital for bird watching. The oak-rhododendron forest along the trail hosts Himalayan Bulbul, Verditer Flycatcher, Kalij Pheasant, and various laughingthrush species. If you are visiting in March–April, the rhododendron trees bloom bright red along the path — making the trek itself as beautiful as the destination.
Tiffin Top is one of the most rewarding experiences Nainital tourism has to offer — it combines the charm of a heritage trail with an unmatched Uttarakhand hill station panorama. Whether you are a first-time visitor or returning to Naini Peak (also known as China Peak) country, this viewpoint stays with you long after you leave.
4 km from Ayarpatta Stand | Difficulty: Easy–Moderate | Time: 1.5–2 hrs up
The trek and horse ride both begin from the Ayarpatta horse stand, which is about 1.5 km from Mall Road. You can reach here by auto or on foot. Horse riders negotiate price here (₹400–600 return). Trekkers follow the wide dirt trail that begins just beyond the stand.
The trail climbs steadily through a beautiful mixed forest of Himalayan oak and rhododendron. The path is well-defined and shaded, which keeps it cool even in summer. You will pass a couple of small viewpoints with partial views of the lake — do not rush past them. Gradient here is moderate.
As you gain elevation, the forest opens out onto a narrower ridge trail. Views of the valley start opening up on both sides. This section can be windy — carry a light jacket. The path is still clear but slightly steeper in patches. First-time trekkers should take their time here.
The final stretch opens into the meadow summit. Dorothy's memorial plaque is here. The 360° panoramic view rewards every step — take your time, sit at the memorial bench, and let the Himalayas do the rest. Return by the same trail, or ask a horse rider to meet you at the top for the descent.
The horse ride from Ayarpatta horse stand to Tiffin Top takes about 40–50 minutes one way. Horses are led by handlers (local guides) who walk the trail alongside you. The route is the same trail as the trek — shaded, pleasant, and not too steep for the horses.
Prices are typically negotiated at the stand. A return trip costs ₹400–600 per person depending on the season and how busy it is. During peak months (April–June, October–November) prices tend to be higher. Always confirm the return arrangement with the handler before you start — most will wait at the top or come back when you call.
The horse ride is perfectly safe for children and older adults. The handlers are experienced and the trail is well-used. Riders are typically seated in a saddle with a handler holding the reins. You do not need riding experience.
