Puducherry, formerly Pondicherry, rose to prominence as "the French Riviera of the East" following French colonisation of India. Puducherry is the Tamil translation of "new town" and is primarily derived from "Poduke," the name of a marketplace or "port town" for Roman trade in the first century. The settlement was once the home of learned scholars versed in the Vedas, so it was also known as Vedapuri. Puducherry, often referred to as India's French capital, is a vibrant coastal city with a quaint charm. The territory's original name, Putucceri, is derived from the Tamil words putu ("new") and ceri ("village"), or "New settlement". The French renamed it Pondichéry, and it remained so until 2006, when it was officially changed to Puducherry. The city is located on India's southeastern coast, approximately 170 kilometres from Chennai.
