Chopta Alpine Meadow — The Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand

Chopta is an alpine meadow (bugyal) at 2,680 metres in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, set within the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. The meadow sits at the confluence of the Mandakini and Alaknanda river systems and offers an unobstructed southward view of the Garhwal Himalayan chain — Chaukhamba (7,138m), Kedarnath (6,940m), Trishul (7,120m), and Nanda Devi (7,816m) are visible on clear days. The nickname "Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand" comes from the combination of open green meadows, surrounding forest, and the dramatic snow-capped backdrop.

Chopta is the base for Tungnath Temple (3,680m) and Chandrashila Peak (4,130m) — the two most popular treks in this region. The meadow itself sits at road level — you can drive directly to Chopta and start the Tungnath trek from the parking area. The surrounding forest is dense with buransh (rhododendron), oak, and deodar cedars. In May–June, the rhododendron trees between Chopta and Tungnath burst into spectacular bloom. In November–March, the meadow receives heavy snowfall — the entire landscape becomes a pristine white snowfield, and Chopta transforms into one of the best snow destinations in Uttarakhand.

Post-monsoon clarity — best mountain views of the year. October is ideal: crystal clear skies, fresh snow on peaks, green meadow still visible. November brings the first snowfall on the meadow itself.

❄ Special: Nov – Mar (Snow)

Chopta receives 3–6 feet of snow. The meadow becomes a snowfield. Extraordinary snow landscape. Tungnath Temple closed but Chandrashila trek in snow is magical. Full winter gear required. −5 to 5°C.
