Deoria Tal — Chaukhamba's Mirror Lake
Deoria Tal is a pristine high-altitude lake at 2,438 metres near Sari village in Ukhimath block, Rudraprayag district. The lake spans approximately 2.5 acres and is fed by natural springs from the surrounding Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary forest. Its fame rests on one extraordinary phenomenon — on clear, windless mornings, the perfectly still waters of Deoria Tal mirror the entire Chaukhamba massif (7,138m) and the surrounding snow-capped Himalayan peaks in a flawless reflection. This scene — the glowing peaks reflected in pre-dawn water — is one of the most iconic and photographed in all of Uttarakhand.
The name Deoria comes from local Garhwali tradition. According to legend, this is the lake where the Pandavas encountered the Yaksha during their exile — the same episode from the Mahabharata involving Yudhishthira's answers to the philosophical questions. The surrounding forest is part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, protecting musk deer, Himalayan black bear, barking deer, and the Himalayan monal.
