Dugalbitta — Chopta's Secret Forest Clearing

Dugalbitta is a large open forest clearing at 2,800 metres, located just 3km before the main Chopta meadow on the Ukhimath–Chopta road. Inside the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, Dugalbitta sits in a natural amphitheatre formed by dense deodar, oak, and rhododendron forest — the clearing offers an open sky and Himalayan views that are actually cleaner than from Chopta itself, because the treeline frames the peaks perfectly.

Dugalbitta is famous for two things: stargazing and wildlife. At 2,800m with zero electricity and no settlements nearby, the night sky here is extraordinary — on new moon nights the Milky Way is a solid band across the sky, and shooting stars are a nightly occurrence. At dawn and dusk, musk deer routinely emerge from the forest edge into the clearing — Dugalbitta sits within the core zone of the Kanchula Korak Musk Deer Sanctuary, and sightings are almost guaranteed in the early morning.

Stargazing at Dugalbitta — A Complete Guide

Dugalbitta is considered one of the best stargazing spots in all of Uttarakhand. The combination of high altitude (2,800m), zero light pollution, clear mountain air (post-monsoon and winter), and an open clearing with 180° sky view creates ideal conditions for naked-eye astronomy and astrophotography.

Best Months
October–November and March–April. Crisp dry air, no clouds. October nights are −2 to 5°C — warm enough to lie out and watch the sky.
Moon Phase
New moon ±3 days. The Milky Way is invisible on full moon nights. Plan around the lunar calendar — our team can help choose the right dates.
For Photographers
Wide-angle lens (14–24mm), f/2.8 or wider, ISO 3200–6400, 20–25 sec exposure. Tripod on the flat clearing. Star trails from 11pm–2am.
Naked Eye
Milky Way band, Jupiter, Saturn rings, shooting stars every 10–15 minutes during meteor showers (Aug Perseids, Dec Geminids). Orion nebula visible.

Camping at Dugalbitta

Dugalbitta has a few operators running tented camps at the clearing. Our camping package includes Swiss tents, sleeping bags, 3 meals, bonfire, guided sunrise walk to Chopta, and evening stargazing session with constellation identification.

  • Swiss/Dome tents: 2–4 person tents with sleeping bags and mattresses. Basic but comfortable — the view outside makes up for everything.
  • Meals: All meals (dinner, breakfast, next day lunch) are local Garhwali food — dal, rice, sabzi, parathas. Chai and Maggi are available throughout.
  • Bonfire: Every evening. The bonfire + stargazing combination at Dugalbitta is the highlight of most Chopta trips.
  • No electricity: Dugalbitta has no power — bring a power bank and a headlamp. The absence of light makes the stars all the brighter.
  • Mobile signal: Very weak to none. BSNL has the best chance. Tell people you'll be offline for the night before leaving Ukhimath.
